Rabat has ordered Spanish journalists from the state-run news agency Efe and public broadcaster TVE to leave the Moroccan town of Fnideq, known as Castillejos in Spain, amid heightened tensions along the border with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The expulsion occurred late Saturday after the journalists were covering reports related to a mass migration attempt involving thousands of migrants trying to cross into Ceuta. According to Efe, the reporters had been documenting operations by Moroccan security forces using tear gas and batons to disperse hundreds of predominantly Sub-Saharan African migrants attempting to reach the border. The order came following a surge in migration activity over the weekend, during which approximately 80,000 people crossed into Ceuta illegally on July 30 and 31. This influx led to violent confrontations between migrants and Moroccan authorities near Fnideq, located just three kilometers from the border. Security sources told Efe that at least 294 migrants, 248 Sub-Saharan Africans and 46 Moroccans, were intercepted during these operations aimed at preventing a large-scale crossing. The expelled journalists had been stationed in Fnideq to cover the situation after social media calls encouraged a mass migration attempt on Saturday. Local authorities reportedly informed the hotels where the journalists were staying that they needed to vacate immediately. A representative from Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior had previously instructed the Efe and TVE teams deployed to Fnideq to leave the area without providing specific reasons for the decision. The official stated he was merely following instructions and warned that their accreditation and equipment could be confiscated if they did not comply. Efe has since contacted both the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior and Spain’s Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, though the former has yet to respond, while the latter confirmed it is working to clarify the situation. This incident follows earlier tensions between Moroccan and Spanish authorities regarding press access. Earlier this month, Moroccan state television channel 2M alleged that Spanish authorities restricted its team from entering Ceuta after the massive influx of migrants, which resulted in at least 141 deaths according to humanitarian organizations. The Moroccan government has repeatedly criticized Spain for allowing illegal immigration through Ceuta, which it claims undermines regional stability and national security. Meanwhile, in Ceuta, local courts have begun processing legal cases linked to the migrant influx. According to reports, three cases of alleged sexual assault committed by undocumented migrants who entered Ceuta on July 30 are currently under investigation. Two suspects have been placed in custody, while a third was ordered to be deported back to his home country. One case involved a man who allegedly entered a private residence and behaved inappropriately inside a bedroom. These developments highlight the complex challenges faced by local authorities in managing the aftermath of such large-scale migration events. Spanish officials have consistently defended freedom of the press, stating they are actively seeking solutions for the expelled journalists. However, the sudden nature of the expulsion and lack of clear justification from Moroccan authorities have raised concerns among media representatives and international observers. The situation underscores the delicate balance between national sovereignty and the right to report on critical issues affecting both countries. The conflict over press access and the broader issue of migration management continue to strain relations between Spain and Morocco. With ongoing efforts to prevent further unauthorized crossings, the role of media coverage in shaping public perception and policy responses remains crucial. Both governments face mounting pressure to address the humanitarian and security implications of the crisis, while ensuring compliance with international norms regarding press freedoms.
