Tunisia’s opposition faces severe repression, with many activists imprisoned or forced into exile. The situation has worsened since President Kaïs Saïed seized power in a self-coup on July 25, 2021, marking the beginning of a crackdown on dissent. Sihem Bensedrine, a 75-year-old human rights activist and former head of Tunisia’s Truth and Dignity Commission, is among those enduring this harsh reality. She has spent months behind bars, awaiting the outcome of legal proceedings that could lead to life imprisonment. The political landscape in Tunisia has shifted dramatically over the past five years. Once hailed as a beacon of democracy following the 2011 revolution, the country has seen its democratic institutions eroded under Saïed’s authoritarian rule. Bensedrine, who has long been a vocal critic of dictatorship, views the current regime as a return to oppressive systems that once ruled the nation. Her activism has made her a target, and she now faces charges of falsifying documents related to the work of the Truth and Dignity Commission, which aimed to uncover the atrocities committed during decades of authoritarian rule. Bensedrine’s journey reflects the broader struggles of Tunisia’s civil society. After fleeing under the regime of former dictator Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, she and her husband, journalist Omar Mestiri, found refuge in Germany through the support of organizations such as the Hamburg Foundation for Political Victims and the PEN literary association. They lived in Graz and Barcelona before returning home to help rebuild the country after the 2011 uprising. Despite their efforts, they were again targeted by authorities, spending time in prison even before Saïed’s rise to power. Under Saïed, the justice system has become a tool of suppression. Over hundreds of cases, courts have imposed lengthy prison sentences on critics, journalists, and members of the opposition. Bensedrine’s case exemplifies this trend. A court recently sentenced her to 25 years in prison for alleged document forgery, though she and her lawyers argue the charges are politically motivated. The ruling comes amid a broader campaign to silence voices that challenge the government’s narrative. The Truth and Dignity Commission, which Bensedrine led, played a crucial role in documenting the suffering of thousands of victims during the era of dictatorship. Its final report, spanning more than 2,000 pages, detailed the fate of over 50,000 individuals, including those subjected to torture. The commission’s work was intended to promote reconciliation and accountability. However, Saïed’s government has sought to undermine these efforts, accusing Bensedrine of fabricating parts of the report to harm the state. Legal challenges continue to mount against Bensedrine. Her attorneys have filed appeals, but she expresses little hope for a favorable outcome. “In my age, this is equivalent to a life sentence,” she says, describing the weight of the charges. Her health has deteriorated due to prolonged detention, and she remains cautious about the future of Tunisia. “The judiciary is overflowing with intellectuals, artists, dissidents, and civil society actors,” she explains. “It’s a declaration of war against society.” Despite the grim outlook, some hope persists. Bensedrine returned from exile in February 2025 after being temporarily released from pretrial detention. She had begun a hunger strike in January, commemorating the anniversary of Ben Ali’s escape from power. Though she has endured physical ailments from her time in jail, she continues to advocate for justice and transparency. Her story underscores the deepening crisis in Tunisia, where the fight for freedom remains both personal and national.
