The affected section of La Línea, a critical corridor connecting Tolima and Quindío, will have one-way traffic for three months following a landslip that occurred on July 25, 2026, near kilometer 47 in Cajamarca. The Instituto Nacional de Vías (Invías) confirmed that repairs will take at least three months, during which time only one lane will remain open. This restriction is part of a broader effort to stabilize the slope and ensure long-term safety for road users. Authorities have implemented a mobility plan to manage the reduced capacity of the route. Vehicles traveling from both directions, Armenia and Ibagué, will face delays of up to 25 minutes due to the restricted flow. Despite these challenges, the corridor remains operational, allowing for passenger and freight transportation without additional restrictions. The plan aims to balance the need for emergency access with the ongoing work required to restore the road’s integrity. Nelson Yovany Jiménez, director of Road Modernization at Invías, stated that the single-lane operation will last a maximum of three months. He emphasized that the corridor has been kept open through careful coordination and management. The temporary measures are necessary to allow for comprehensive repair work while ensuring public safety. The technical solution includes extracting accumulated water from the site, draining the slope, and implementing stabilization works such as reinforcement, paving, containment structures, and hydraulic management. These activities will be monitored continuously using equipment capable of tracking changes in the terrain around the clock. The goal is to prevent future incidents by addressing the root causes of the landslide. The contractor responsible for maintaining the Armenia-Cajamarca corridor will carry out the interventions, while Invías seeks approval for an additional budget of approximately 22 billion pesos. This funding will cover critical interventions along the route and the acquisition of land located within the affected area. The process involves acquiring properties and completing legal procedures to facilitate the necessary construction work. Local authorities in Cajamarca have also introduced an alternative housing option for residents who were displaced by the landslide. The mayor explained that some homes are located on the edge of the slope, and their presence poses a risk. The community must relocate to safer areas, and the municipality will provide rental options for six months. Technical assessments identified that water infiltration had contributed to the saturation and instability of the slope. Transporters have expressed concerns over the impact of the restricted passage on national logistics. The La Línea corridor handles 70% of Colombia's cargo movement, making it vital for trade. Gabriel Marín, a member of the Colombian Trucking Association, noted that delays of four to five hours are affecting delivery schedules. This disruption could lead to problems with fuel supply and driver sustenance, particularly for international shipments reliant on timely transit. The landslide began early Saturday morning, causing a mass movement that damaged several nearby residences. The ground collapsed, creating a void that endangered nearby structures. Emergency services responded swiftly, but the damage underscored the fragility of the region’s infrastructure. The incident highlights the importance of continuous maintenance and monitoring of high-risk zones, especially in mountainous regions prone to landslides. As the repair efforts continue, officials stress that the situation requires patience and cooperation. While the immediate challenge is managing traffic under constrained conditions, the long-term objective is to restore the corridor to its full capacity and enhance its resilience against future risks. The outcome of this project will determine how quickly the region can resume normal operations and maintain its role as a key artery for Colombian commerce.
