Cohen stated that the decision to seek Chambers' extradition was likely driven by political considerations benefiting Trump, the AIPAC lobbying group, and Zionist supporters. He described the move as a deliberate effort to pursue political goals. Chambers describes himself as anti-imperialist and is the heir to one of America’s wealthiest families, owners of Cox Communications. In mid-2023, he sold shares valued at approximately $250 million to his family and since then has funded progressive and humanitarian projects, ranging from initiatives within the Black community to nonprofit organizations aiding children in the Middle East. "Fergie is in jail because he uses his fortune to support Palestine and those suffering genocide in Gaza," said Stella Schnabel, his partner, in a statement. "In short, he faces political persecution for having dedicated his life to building a better society rather than exploiting people and profiting from war. He should be with our family, continuing his vital humanitarian and social defense work." According to his lawyer, Llorenç Salvà, Chambers has donated more than $1 million to humanitarian efforts in Gaza. The American donor has been featured in numerous media reports in his home country and was interviewed on a local television news program in New Hampshire late last year regarding a direct action against Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense contractor, organized by Palestine Action, a group he financially supported. Shortly afterward, he moved to Tunisia, where he purchased the Club Africain, a popular football club. Chambers claims he has known for over a decade that he is under scrutiny by the U.S. federal government.
