Anri Essop and the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Gerrie Nel met with the head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Andrea Johnson, on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, regarding allegations made against her during testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The meeting followed Johnson's appearance before the commission on Tuesday, where she addressed claims that she had allegedly leaked confidential information to senior Crime Intelligence officer Feroz Khan. The Madlanga Commission, established to investigate allegations of drug cartel infiltration into law enforcement, politics, and private security, has been examining claims that certain officials have been compromised. She later distanced herself from Khan, stating they had not communicated for approximately one-and-a-half years. Despite this, she admitted to having known Khan professionally, describing him as “very affable.” Johnson also mentioned attending Khan’s 50th birthday celebration several years ago, as her husband, another Crime Intelligence officer, had been invited. The Madlanga Commission has heard testimonies from several high-profile individuals, including retired Hawks Colonel Kobus Roelofse and Captain Mark McLean, who both testified that they believed Johnson had leaked the criminal complaint against Khan. Johnson acknowledged that the NPA had confirmed the matter on 10 July 2026, and that Captain McLean had corroborated the same information. Meanwhile, former KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who initially raised concerns about drug cartel infiltration, has expressed skepticism toward Khan’s credibility. This has contributed to growing tensions within the Crime Intelligence unit, which has long been plagued by allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement.
