Novi vođa ORF-a: "Mi nismo luksuz"

The Austrian free cultural scene faces a precarious future due to financial constraints imposed by government austerity measures. This crisis has placed significant pressure on institutions such as the ORF-Radio-Symphony Orchestra (RSO), which is now grappling with potential cuts to its funding. Markus Poschner, the new chief conductor of the ORF-Radio-Symphony Orchestra, has expressed his views on these challenges. Despite assurances that the ORF would receive more funding from the broadcasting fee by 2029 if it continues to operate the RSO, the immediate future appears less certain. When asked about the future funding of the RSO, the ORF issued a general statement indicating that they are currently working on their financial plan for the upcoming year but could not provide specific details at this time.

Poschner acknowledges the challenging times ahead but remains optimistic about the role of culture in society. He argues that art and music are essential components of social cohesion and should not be sacrificed during periods of financial strain. As one of the largest educational institutions in Austria, the ORF plays a crucial role in promoting cultural engagement through its orchestral activities. Poschner believes that the RSO has the expertise and profile necessary to continue making meaningful contributions to Austrian culture without an expiration date.

In response to concerns about the potential reduction of cultural offerings, Poschner highlights the importance of shared experiences facilitated by the orchestra. Through initiatives such as "Poschners Meilensteinen" at the Musikverein, where program notes accompany performances, and public rehearsals held at the RadioKulturhaus, the RSO aims to engage audiences in new ways.
