A German police inspection in June uncovered small Nazi-era markings on 12 of 34 long guns seized from Tyrolean marksmen during a bus stop in the “Kleines Deutsches Eck” area. The weapons were found in a vehicle carrying 50 members of three Tyrolean shooting companies returning from celebrations in Salzburg. The discovery has triggered legal proceedings in both Austria and Germany, with different outcomes depending on jurisdiction. The firearms, which were mostly kept accessible within the bus, were confiscated due to the lack of proper documentation. The Austrian authorities, specifically the Innsbruck Public Prosecutor’s Office, concluded their investigation after questioning the weapon masters, stating there was no evidence that the symbols, small swastikas or Wehrmacht eagles, were used with political intent. The office's spokesperson, Hansjörg Mayr, confirmed this stance following discussions with the weapon experts. Meanwhile, prosecutors in Traunstein, Bavaria, continue examining whether the public display of such symbols constitutes a criminal offense under local laws. The symbols, measuring five millimeters in size, were identified as historical marks from World War II, known as “punzierungen.” According to the Tyrolean Shooting Companies Association, these markings are part of the historical record and have no current ideological significance. Landeskommandant Thomas Saurer emphasized that the symbols were neither added nor altered by the shooters and were not visible to the naked eye from typical viewing distances. This detail is crucial in distinguishing between historical artifacts and intentional political messaging. The case involving the 34 long guns has led to separate investigations against 31 shooters from three companies in the region. These individuals face charges of unlawful possession of long arms, stemming from the initial traffic stop where officers noticed a firearm-like object in the bus. The incident occurred during the return journey of participants attending religious and civic events in Salzburg. The lack of required paperwork prompted the seizure of the weapons, which are currently held in Germany pending further legal processes. While the Innsbruck prosecutors have closed their inquiry into the use of Nazi symbols, they have not ruled out future action should new evidence emerge. The Bavarian authorities, however, remain cautious, focusing on whether the symbols were displayed publicly in a manner that could be perceived by a large number of people. This distinction is key in determining the legality of such displays under German law. The shooters' representatives have assured that once the weapons are returned, the historical markings will be removed. This step aims to ensure compliance with contemporary regulations while preserving the historical value of the firearms.
