Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has claimed that obesity rates in the United States have dropped by 3% in the last year, attributing the decline to efforts to promote healthy eating and reduce reliance on medical interventions. However, fact-checking organizations have found that the statistic he cited does not accurately reflect the timeline of the decline. According to Gallup polling, the rate of obesity among U.S. adults reached its peak in 2022 and has fallen every year since. The decline began during the Biden administration and has continued under President Trump. Kennedy has repeated these claims multiple times in recent months, including during an August 24 event on childhood nutrition, where he stated, “This year, obesity rates dropped in this country, for the first time in 40 years, by about 3%.” He also mentioned that consumption of “real foods” increased by 7 to 10%, suggesting that improved dietary habits contributed to the decline. Similar statements were made at a community health center in California on August 13 and at a conservative think tank event in Michigan, where he claimed that obesity rates had dropped by 2.5% since Trump took office. These figures, however, do not align with the actual timeline of the decline. Gallup’s data indicates a total reduction of 3.5 percentage points between 2022 and the first half of 2026. Approximately two-thirds of that decline occurred between 2022 and 2024, during the Biden administration. Therefore, the majority of the observed drop predates Trump’s presidency and cannot be attributed solely to his policies or Kennedy’s initiatives. Kennedy has positioned himself as a proponent of healthier eating habits through his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign, emphasizing the importance of consuming “real foods.” He has occasionally criticized the use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, such as Ozempic, which have gained popularity in recent years. Despite this stance, some experts suggest that the rise in the use of these medications might be a more plausible explanation for the observed decline in obesity rates than changes in dietary behavior. Elizabeth Selvin, a professor of epidemiology and medicine at Johns Hopkins University, noted in an email that there is no clear evidence that Americans have significantly altered their lifestyles or dietary practices. She emphasized that while the overall trend appears to be a decline, the long-term sustainability of this trend remains uncertain. Government data has shown instances where obesity rates have dipped or remained stable only to rise again in subsequent years. The Department of Health and Human Services has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the specific data sources Kennedy used to back his claims. While he may be referencing Gallup’s findings, the data itself does not support the assertion that the decline occurred within a single year. Experts remain divided on the exact causes behind the observed trend, with some pointing to potential factors beyond the scope of Kennedy’s public messaging. As the debate continues, the broader implications of the changing obesity landscape remain unclear. Whether the decline represents a sustained shift toward healthier living or a temporary fluctuation influenced by external factors such as medication usage, further research and monitoring will be necessary to determine the true drivers of the trend. For now, the statistics Kennedy has highlighted appear to be misinterpreted or selectively applied, raising questions about the accuracy of his public statements.
