The extreme heat this summer has triggered severe psychological distress among individuals with existing mental health conditions, according to experts. The unusually high temperatures have led to widespread discomfort, exacerbated stress, and other challenges, particularly affecting those suffering from anxiety, depression, or other mental disorders. Psychologist Daniela Renn explained that the psychological effects of heat are far greater than many people realize. “Heat is a considerable physical and psychological burden for many people, directly impacting endurance, attention, and concentration,” she stated. According to Renn, fatigue, exhaustion, and difficulties with focus are immediate consequences. Heat becomes especially burdensome for individuals who have previously struggled with anxiety, panic attacks, or depression. These feelings can be further intensified by the oppressive conditions. The body’s typical response to high temperatures, such as increased heart rate, sweating, and a sense of being overwhelmed, can trigger or worsen symptoms of anxiety in many people. Renn noted that a common fear arises from feeling powerless in situations beyond one's control. As a result, many individuals worry they will no longer be able to manage their daily lives, whether at work, within their families, or due to concerns over personal health. Studies show that extreme heat can exacerbate existing mental health issues. A 2021 study published in the European Journal of Public Health found that the risk of psychological stress and certain mental illnesses increases with higher temperatures. There is a well-established link between high temperatures and conditions such as schizophrenia and dementia. Many individuals with these conditions require frequent hospitalization during heatwaves, and the number of people seeking help due to heat-related issues continues to rise. While some people enjoy the summer season, others find it stressful. For many, images of vacations, swimming in lakes, and warm evenings can add additional pressure, worsening their mental health. This concern extends into the future, as people with mental health challenges begin to worry about the arrival of the next heatwave. According to Renn, this is an acute stress reaction caused by heat, combined with fear of even hotter summers ahead. With heatwaves becoming more frequent and prolonged, these individuals feel they are losing control over their circumstances. The rising number of people affected by heat-related mental health issues has also contributed to an increase in sick days. Many struggle with psychological problems linked to poor sleep, making them more irritable. On exceptionally hot days, aggression can escalate among some individuals. However, Renn emphasized that a certain level of concern regarding extreme heat is not inherently negative. “Worry directs our attention toward challenges and helps develop strategies to actively improve the situation,” she said. The problem arises when worry turns into persistent fear. The key to overcoming fear is the feeling of control, one must believe that something can be done to address the situation. As heatwaves become more common and longer-lasting, psychological stress is likely to grow even more pronounced. The consequences of heat often go beyond superficial discomfort, potentially significantly affecting mental health, which has historically received insufficient attention.
