On March 26, 2026, Israeli naval intelligence played a pivotal role in the successful assassination of Iran’s Navy Chief, Alireza Tangsiri, in the port city of Bandar Abbas. The operation, carried out in coordination with the Israeli Air Force, also eliminated key Iranian naval cruise missile production sites and facilities linked to submarine technology. This strike marked a turning point in the ongoing conflict with Iran, contributing to the eventual agreement on a ceasefire in early April. Prior to the actual strike, both the United States and Israel had attempted multiple times to eliminate Tangsiri. According to reports, Israeli naval intelligence conducted extensive research to identify and track high-ranking Iranian naval personnel, including Tangsiri. This effort included analyzing operational patterns and gathering intelligence on their movements. Once Tangsiri was identified as a priority target, he was added to the list of individuals monitored by the IDF’s intelligence and air force units. Israeli naval operations directorates worked closely with the IDF’s intelligence directorate to obtain real-time data necessary for the strike. An officer stationed within the air force targeting staff reviewed and validated this intelligence before the attack proceeded. The operation was executed using precision strikes coordinated between the Israeli Air Force and naval intelligence, resulting in the elimination of Tangsiri and associated military infrastructure. In parallel with the assassination of Tangsiri, the Israeli Air Force launched strikes against two major naval cruise missile production sites located in Tehran. These sites, under the control of the Iranian Defense Ministry, were responsible for developing and manufacturing long-range missiles capable of striking both maritime and land targets. Such capabilities posed a direct threat to U.S. interests and the security of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which much of the world’s oil flows. Throughout the early months of the 2026 conflict, the Israeli Navy provided critical intelligence support to both Israeli and American forces. By April 16, the navy reported having contributed to or facilitated 154 attacks during the war with Iran and its ally, Hezbollah. Of these, 95 were directed at Iranian targets, with 68 of those being executed by U.S. forces based solely on Israeli naval intelligence. The cumulative effect of these operations significantly weakened Iran’s ability to challenge Western and regional powers, particularly concerning access to the Strait of Hormuz. An IDF naval officer, speaking to The Jerusalem Post, described the experience of participating in these operations as a profound application of the training received during service. He noted that while the value of such training was initially unclear, the opportunity to apply these skills in real-world scenarios, particularly during the campaign against Iran, provided a tangible sense of purpose and achievement. Additionally, the Israeli Navy disclosed that it had participated in the assassination of five senior officials from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Beirut. This revelation underscored the breadth of Israeli naval involvement in counterterrorism efforts beyond the immediate conflict with Iran, highlighting the strategic importance of maritime operations in broader regional security concerns.
