These demonstrations, led by India’s Generation Z, have forced the government into a crisis, culminating in the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after intense public pressure. The protests began with a specific trigger: outrage over a leaked exam paper that forced nearly two million students to retake their final exams. But this issue quickly evolved into a broader movement against perceived governmental failures and authoritarian tendencies. Security forces responded with batons and tear gas, leaving several demonstrators injured. Reports emerged of rubber bullets being used, further escalating tensions. In response, the youth turned to humor and satire as tools of resistance, leveraging platforms such as Instagram and TikTok to amplify their message. At the center of this movement was a new form of protest, what some call “perfect protest.” It combined creative expression with digital virality, using memes, videos, and hashtags to spread dissent rapidly. One popular image showed young protesters climbing police barricades and rolling down them, symbolizing both defiance and irreverence. Another featured signs reading “Tie me up, Dad,” a sarcastic nod to the generational divide between the youth and older authorities. These messages resonated deeply among younger Indians who felt increasingly alienated from traditional forms of protest. The movement gained momentum through a blend of humor and serious critique. A 24-year-old law student named Karan Azad described how his generation uses satire to cope with frustration and helplessness. “Humor has become our tool to deal with pain and powerlessness,” he told reporters at the Jantar Mantar protest site. His words reflected a sentiment shared widely among participants, many of whom expressed a sense of duty to fight for their rights. “If we don’t stand up for ourselves, no one else will,” said a 24-year-old demonstrator holding a sign that mocked Modi’s past job selling tea. “He can’t even make tea properly.” Another protester held a placard depicting Modi as a fairy with the caption “Don’t touch me,” highlighting the perception of Modi as an untouchable or magical figure. This imagery underscored the growing disillusionment among youth, who saw him more as a distant icon than a relatable leader.
