An Indian-origin doctor has been sentenced to six months in jail in the United States after admitting to secretly recording women in a hospital staff restroom. The court also ordered him to register as a sex offender for 15 years and undergo ongoing mental health and sex offender treatment. The case involves Advait Deshmukh, a former medical resident at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Ohio, who pleaded guilty to one count of attempted tampering with evidence and seven counts of voyeurism. The incident came to light in June 2025 when a hospital employee discovered a cellphone hidden inside a box in a unisex staff restroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. When another employee attempted to remove the device, Deshmukh intervened and claimed the phone belonged to him. A joint investigation by Toledo Police and ProMedica revealed over 80 images taken between February and May 2025. At least six women were identified as having been recorded without their knowledge or consent. Investigators believe the behavior may have started as early as 2018, based on the evidence collected. Deshmukh apologized to the victims before sentencing. His legal team requested probation instead of incarceration, citing his participation in therapy aimed at understanding the gravity of his actions. The judge denied this request and imposed a six-month prison sentence. Deshmukh will remain under active probation until June 2029. He also plans to move to Franklin County following his release but must continue registering with local authorities and adhering to all court-mandated conditions. During the incident, Deshmukh was a third-year resident at the University of Toledo, specializing in endourology and urologic oncology. After the discovery of the hidden device, the university placed him on administrative leave. His residency was ultimately not renewed following an internal investigation into the matter.
