Durban authorities executed a large-scale raid targeting a building on Lancers Road in the city centre, described as a major crime generator due to its association with drug use, prostitution, and other illicit activities. The operation took place in the early hours of Monday, involving multiple government departments and law enforcement agencies working together to assess the situation and gather critical information. The building, located on the outskirts of Durban's Central Business District (CBD), has long been a focal point for criminal activity. It is situated near essential services such as healthcare facilities, taxi ranks, local businesses, and the Early Morning Market. According to officials, the structure serves as both a residence and a hub for illegal transactions, with reports indicating that it hosts continuous parties featuring alcohol and drugs throughout the day and night. This environment has contributed to the area being labeled as one of the most problematic in the city. The operation was led by the Durban Metro Police Service, supported by a coalition of departments including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Human Settlements, Social Facilitators, Fire Services, Building Inspectors, Water and Sanitation, Electricity, Durban Solid Waste (DSW), the Strategy Office, IT Support Team, Security Management, and Health. These teams worked in unison to conduct a thorough assessment of the building's occupancy, infrastructure, and compliance with legal standards. Brigadier Parboo Sewpersad, head of the Metro Police Special Operations, stated that the primary objective of the operation was to profile the building and identify its occupants. “We wanted to understand who lives here because it is one of the worst buildings in the city and a major crime generator,” he explained. Upon arrival shortly after 5 a.m., officers encountered a scene of ongoing activity, suggesting that such behavior is routine in the building. Sewpersad noted that previous efforts had already yielded some data, and the current operation aimed to consolidate findings into a comprehensive report. This would serve as the foundation for developing a strategic plan to address the issues surrounding the building. He highlighted several concerns, including the lack of basic utilities within the structure, residents reportedly rely on external sources for water and electricity, and the accumulation of refuse, which indicates poor waste management practices. Additionally, the presence of unauthorized business operations and violations of local regulations further complicated the situation. The building is allegedly used for storage and as a site for prostitution, contributing to the area's reputation as a hotspot for unlawful activities. Sewpersad emphasized that the operation was well-planned, with multiple coordination sessions preceding the actual visit. A resident, speaking anonymously, confirmed the challenging living conditions. He described the building as unfit for habitation, citing the absence of essential services and the prevalence of garbage. Despite these hardships, individuals continue to reside there, often seeking employment opportunities in the city. Rent varies depending on the location within the building, with average rates hovering around R700 per month. The individual expressed that migration from rural areas in pursuit of work had proven unsuccessful, leaving them with limited options.
