Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has opted against sending any ministers to a critical meeting aimed at addressing the crisis at the Ilva steel plant in Taranto, choosing instead to have only technical staff attend discussions over the court-mandated shutdown of the plant's hot area. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from labor unions, who argue it signals a lack of political commitment to resolving the ongoing industrial and environmental emergency. The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, was intended to address the imminent closure of the hot zone at Ilva, ordered by the Milan Court of Appeal. This closure could lead to at least 5,000 direct layoffs and affect another 10,000 workers in the supply chain. Despite the gravity of the situation, key ministers such as Adolfo Urso, Marina Calderone, and Gilberto Pichetto Fratin did not attend the session. Neither did other senior officials like Giancarlo Giorgetti and Tommaso Foti. Instead, the meeting was chaired by Federico Eichberg, head of the prime minister’s office at the ministry. Labor unions have condemned the absence of high-ranking government figures, calling it disrespectful and dismissive of their concerns. Sasha Colautti of the USB union questioned whether the government had truly listened, given the initial claim that the meeting would serve as a forum for dialogue. Davide Sperti of the Uilm union emphasized that while the meeting was technical in nature, the responses needed to be politically driven. He noted that a new communication to unions would follow after meetings with employer associations, local authorities, and companies in the supply chain. Michele De Palma, leader of the Fiom union, described the meeting as negative, stating that the government had failed to recognize the urgency of the situation following eight hours of strikes. He warned that time was running out and called on Meloni, opposition parties, and local authorities to take responsibility rather than avoid the issue. “The countdown has already begun,” he said, stressing that the government must act decisively. The unions reiterated their proposals during the meeting, focusing on maintaining the integrity of the Ilva group, ensuring continuous production, environmental remediation, decarbonization, and protecting jobs. According to the Ministry of Enterprises, these themes will be further examined in the coming weeks, particularly in light of the need to shut down the blast furnaces by October 26. This deadline stems from the impossibility of removing approximately 2,000 tons of asbestos in the hot area and the necessity of revising the Integrated Environmental Authorization, which the court believes does not ensure public health if annual steel production exceeds six million tons, a limit set for twelve years pending decarbonization efforts. On Tuesday, local authorities will travel to Rome to review investment projects in the area. On Wednesday, meetings with Confindustria, Federacciai, Federmeccanica, and major national steel companies are scheduled. However, several companies reportedly declined the invitation, possibly due to uncertainty over their role in shaping new industrial solutions for the former Ilva site. Thursday will see discussions with companies in the supply chain, many of whom face potential reductions in orders. Following these meetings, ministers will convene to assess progress and begin formulating a response. The situation remains precarious, with no clear resolution in sight. The government’s reluctance to engage directly with unions and industry stakeholders has raised concerns about its ability to manage the crisis effectively. With deadlines approaching and tensions rising, the path forward remains uncertain, leaving thousands of workers in limbo as the clock ticks toward October 26.
