The 2026/2027 school calendar for Italy has been officially announced, marking the start of the academic year with the first bell ringing in September. Students across the country will return to their classrooms following summer holidays, with the exact dates varying by region. The new schedule outlines the beginning and end of the school year, including national and local holidays, as well as vacation periods. Schools in the autonomous province of Bolzano will be the first to resume classes on September 7, 2026. This is followed by the Veneto region, the Autonomous Province of Trento, and the Val d'Aosta on September 10. On September 14, students in the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Piedmont, and Umbria will begin their lessons. The next day, September 15, will see the return of students in Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Sicily, and Tuscany. The remaining regions, including Abruzzo, Basilicata, and Sardinia, will start classes on September 16, while students in Puglia will begin their studies on September 17. National fixed holidays include October 4, which marks Saint Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Italy, falling on a Sunday this year. November 1 is celebrated as All Saints' Day, December 8 as the Immaculate Conception, December 25 as Christmas, December 26 as St. Stephen’s Day, January 1 as New Year's Day, and January 6 as the Feast of the Epiphany. Additionally, there is the Monday of the Angel, April 25 as Liberation Day, May 1 as Labor Day, and June 2 as Republic Day. Local patron saint festivals will also take place according to current regulations. Winter break begins on either December 23 or 24, depending on the region, and ends on January 6, 2027. However, in Sicily, the return to school is scheduled for January 8. Spring break runs from March 25 to March 30, 2027, for all regions, except for the province of Trento, where the holiday extends until March 31, 2027. The final days of the academic year vary by region. The first schools to close will be those in Emilia-Romagna and the Marche on June 5, 2027. Following them, on June 8, students in Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Puglia, Sardinia, Umbria, and the Autonomous Province of Trento will finish their lessons. On June 9, the last class bells will ring for students in Abruzzo, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Molise, and the Val d'Aosta. The final days of the school year will be marked by students in Piedmont, Sicily, and Tuscany on June 10. Veneto students will conclude their year on June 12, and the last group, those in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, will finish on June 16. Kindergartens across most regions will close on June 30, 2027. An exception is made for the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where activities will end on June 26. Meanwhile, the Autonomous Province of Trento will have its kindergartens close on July 30. These dates ensure that the entire educational system follows a structured and regulated academic calendar throughout the 2026/2027 school year.
