Economists at major Canadian banks estimate that the value of goods subject to the new tariffs could reach approximately $30 billion, representing around five percent of total exports to the U.S. Andrew DiCapua, principal economist at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, highlighted that this could affect roughly 100,000 jobs. He warned that companies producing these goods may struggle to remain competitive under the increased cost burden, leading to reduced output, fewer hires, or outright layoffs. With the current unemployment rate in Canada standing at 6.5%, as of June, the added strain could push more workers into hardship. Recent data shows that manufacturing alone has seen a decline of 61,000 jobs since peaking in January 2025. In December 2025, Algoma Steel laid off 1,000 employees due to the impact of U.S. tariffs. Dennis Darby, president and CEO of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, expressed concern over the ongoing instability. He stated that businesses are adopting a cautious approach, deferring investment and production decisions until the trade environment becomes more predictable. This hesitancy, he argued, undermines long-term growth and stability. A Deloitte report published in June echoed these concerns, describing Canada’s economy as “on pause” due to persistent trade uncertainties. The potential consequences extend beyond the targeted industries. Even businesses not directly impacted by the tariffs may feel the ripple effects of prolonged trade disputes. Uncertainty about future policy shifts has discouraged innovation and expansion, limiting opportunities for job creation. As the U.S.-Canada trade relationship remains volatile, the economic landscape for Canadian firms continues to shift unpredictably, leaving many businesses and workers in a precarious position.
