Kerala's power crisis has dealt a severe blow to the V.D. Satheesan government, forcing unprecedented power cuts and sparking unrest among citizens and political factions alike. The state's electricity board, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), reported a dramatic decline in daily power generation, dropping to 16.6 million units from 44.22 million units per day compared to the same period last year. This sharp reduction has led to unannounced blackouts during nighttime hours, disrupting daily life and highlighting the growing strain on the state's energy infrastructure. The root cause of the crisis lies in the inadequate rainfall during the monsoon season, which has significantly reduced water levels in key reservoirs. These low levels have crippled hydroelectric power production, which traditionally forms a large portion of Kerala's energy mix. As of July 21, several major reservoirs were operating far below their normal capacities. The Idukki reservoir stood at just 28.5 per cent of its total volume, while the Kakki reservoir was at 30.84 per cent. Other critical sites such as Idamalayar, Mattupetty, and Pampa fared even worse, with the latter two registering mere 4.6 per cent and 3.11 per cent of their respective capacities. Power minister Sunny Joseph acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating that the state is sourcing additional power from external providers at increased costs to meet demand. He attributed the worsening crisis to the monsoon deficit, noting that further reductions in rainfall could exacerbate the problem. KSEB officials have expressed concerns over the potential for a massive power shortage, warning that the current conditions could lead to a prolonged energy crisis unless immediate action is taken. The impact of these disruptions has extended beyond technical challenges, affecting public morale and political dynamics. The state's reputation as a football-loving region was severely tested when power cuts disrupted the viewing of FIFA World Cup matches. In response, Chief Minister Satheesan ordered uninterrupted power supply for the final match on July 20, allowing KSEB to procure 200 MW of power at a cost of Rs 5.96 per unit on July 18. Despite these measures, tensions escalated, with reports of mob violence directed at KSEB offices. Political blame has been swift and pointed. The ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) government faces criticism from the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), which accuses it of poor preparation and negligence. CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan Master claimed that the crisis stems from a series of administrative lapses and highlighted the need for urgent reforms. Meanwhile, BJP state leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar condemned the government's handling of the issue, calling it a man-made disaster resulting from systemic failures. Public frustration continues to mount as residents grapple with the sudden shift from reliable power to frequent interruptions. While some hope for improved monsoon conditions, the state's power authorities remain uncertain about future prospects. With the monsoon season still ongoing and reservoir levels showing little improvement, the outlook for Kerala's energy security remains bleak. The coming weeks will likely determine whether the state can stabilize its power supply or face deeper economic and social repercussions.
