In June, Anthropic released a report suggesting that processes within AI models resemble theoretical descriptions of human consciousness. While the report does not confirm whether these models possess actual consciousness, it underscores their significance. Chris Olah, one of the founders of Anthropic, reportedly attempted to convince high-ranking religious figures of the possibility of machine consciousness. According to reports, Olah expressed concern upon learning that Pope Leo XIV excluded the idea of machine consciousness in his encyclical "Magnifica Humanitas," prompting him to reconsider attending the Vatican. Olah emphasized that if AI models could make decisions in favor of good, the world would be safer. However, attributing such decision-making abilities to AI can obscure the responsibility developers bear for any harm caused by their creations.
