In an email to Newsweek, he stated that the administration has gone beyond reasonable limits in its immigration enforcement. He added that Congress bears responsibility for improving the existing laws, noting that many lawmakers avoid addressing the issue due to political concerns. Bacon’s remarks reflect a rare critique from a Republican figure who typically supports stricter border security measures. Earlier in the week, he published an opinion piece in the Omaha World-Herald focusing on Mariana’s case. In the piece, he acknowledged that deporting dangerous criminals poses a legitimate threat to public safety, but he condemned the administration for engaging in "inhumane, indecent, and un-Christian actions" in other instances. Mariana, according to Bacon, is an honors graduate and aspiring commercial pilot who arrived in the U.S. at age 16 following a traumatic childhood. She learned English independently, graduated from high school, earned an aviation degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha with academic honors, and obtained a private pilot’s license while working to support herself. A removal order was issued after she missed an immigration hearing during her high school years, which Bacon attributes to her abandonment by her parents. He noted that Mariana had complied with all immigration requirements, including regular check-ins, and had previously received stays of removal. Bacon claimed he had spoken directly with the Secretary of Homeland Security regarding Mariana’s case. He emphasized that she was never personally informed of the court hearing and that the decision to remove her was based solely on her absence during her minor years. He argued that deporting individuals who have established lives in the U.S., followed legal procedures, and contributed positively to society does little to enhance public safety. Bacon further indicated that Mariana’s situation is not isolated. He mentioned several other cases where individuals facing deportation have met similar criteria, people who have lived in the U.S. for years, maintained lawful status, and adhered to immigration regulations. These cases, he said, highlight inconsistencies in how the administration applies its policies. The White House responded to Bacon’s criticisms by emphasizing that the Trump administration is strictly enforcing laws enacted by Congress. A White House spokesperson, Lauren Bis, stated that the administration does not selectively enforce laws and encouraged undocumented immigrants to use the CBP Home app to facilitate their departure, offering them financial compensation and travel assistance. Meanwhile, the administration has continued expanding its immigration enforcement efforts. Border czar Tom Homan recently announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was on track for a second consecutive month of record-breaking arrests. This campaign, described as "deportation-maxxing," aligns with President Donald Trump’s pledge to initiate the largest mass deportation operation in U.S. history. Trump’s strategy includes detaining both undocumented immigrants and those with legal status, including green card holders and visa holders. Newsweek has documented numerous cases involving individuals with valid documentation who were affected by recent immigration raids and arrests. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE have yet to respond to inquiries regarding these operations. Bacon’s comments have sparked debate within the political sphere, particularly among Republicans who generally support strict immigration controls. His stance suggests growing unease even within the party about the broader implications of current deportation practices. As the administration presses forward with its enforcement agenda, the question remains whether such policies will continue to face scrutiny from unexpected quarters.
