The incidents reportedly took place during informal gatherings known as “Frühschoppen,” which are traditional early-morning social meetings in Austrian culture. These conversations allegedly included comments perceived as sexist, with Ruck reportedly making remarks that undermined the professional standing of female colleagues. The controversy gained traction after audio recordings surfaced, though some sources suggest these clips may have been edited or taken out of context. According to the Kurier, one of the recorded exchanges involved Ruck’s own vice president, who was reportedly instructed to make room for his son in a political position. This directive was described as a “command” that she was compelled to salute. Shortly afterward, the economic federation reportedly sent her away, offering a statement that seemed to downplay the situation by suggesting such remarks were common among men. Ruck's close friend and fellow politician, Michael Ludwig, has remained silent regarding the allegations, despite being the city’s mayor and often referring to Vienna as the “City of Women.” His silence has drawn criticism, especially given that his deputy, Barbara Novak, has previously been portrayed in public discourse as a willing recipient of orders. This portrayal is considered both absurd and damaging to the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), particularly since Novak is viewed as a potential future mayor. Other prominent figures within the party, including Jürgen Czernohorszky, the city’s democracy chief, and Eva-Maria Holzleitner, the current minister for women, have also remained quiet. Czernohorszky, whose family includes Austria’s first female minister, Johanna Dohnal, is expected to have strong views on gender equality, yet he has not publicly commented. Similarly, Holzleitner, who holds a key government post, has not spoken out. The Social Democratic Economic Federation expressed disapproval of the alleged behavior, though this stance appears to have occurred without Ludwig’s knowledge. In contrast, Ludwig reportedly defended Ruck later in the day, indicating a possible division within the leadership ranks. Critics argue that the lack of public response reflects a broader issue: the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles.
