Australians may have been unknowingly purchasing food that does not match its label, according to a major investigation by Australia’s ABC News. A comprehensive study revealed discrepancies between product claims and scientific findings, casting doubt over the reliability of food labeling in the country. The investigation, conducted by Four Corners, examined numerous food items, including cage-free eggs, seafood, tomato products, spices, and alcoholic beverages, and found that many did not align with their advertised origins or quality assurances. The investigation spanned eight months and compiled extensive data from food import inspections, recall records, and international food fraud intelligence. Despite the detection of hundreds of contaminated or unsafe food products annually, such as rice laced with arsenic and cheese infected with Listeria, only a small portion of imported foods undergoes inspection. Testing for harmful contaminants has reportedly decreased since 2019. Honey stands out as the sole imported food regularly subjected to adulteration checks, with a testing rate of 5 percent. To ensure impartiality, Four Corners commissioned independent forensic testing of hundreds of products across various brands. Before testing, all brand names and identifying information were removed, and each sample was given a unique identifier. Scientists analyzing the data were unaware of the product’s identity. This method aimed to eliminate bias and provide objective results. Testing took place at multiple locations across four Australian states, involving purchases from major supermarket chains such as Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi, as well as independent retailers. The investigation collaborated with Source Certain, an Australian forensic traceability laboratory known for its work with law enforcement agencies worldwide, including the FBI, Scotland Yard, and Interpol. Additional specialized labs contributed to the analysis of specific products. Source Certain employs advanced techniques such as stable isotope analysis and trace element analysis to identify a food item’s unique chemical fingerprint. These fingerprints are compared against verified reference samples to confirm the product’s origin. While absolute certainty is unattainable in forensic science, the lab only reports findings when it is sufficiently confident in the evidence. Among the most alarming discoveries were the results related to processed tomato products. One in four of the tested tomato products failed forensic country-of-origin testing or required further investigation. Notably, Leggo’s tomato paste products showed consistent failures. Out of 33 samples tested, 27—or 80 percent, failed the origin check. All of these failed products contained tomatoes sourced from China, despite their packaging claiming “Australian grown.” Leggo’s, a widely recognized brand, markets itself as using Australian-grown tomatoes. Its parent company, Simplot, a U.S.-based food giant, did not grant an interview but issued a statement refuting the test results. The company asserted that it relied on trusted suppliers and performed regular due diligence. It claimed that supply chain documents traced the problematic products back to Australian farms, though it admitted it had not conducted forensic testing. Other brands, including Aldi’s Remano and Coles’ home-brand Italian tomato pastes, also faced similar issues. Both brands assert that their products contain Italian or Australian tomatoes, yet testing confirmed Chinese origins. Aldi responded by rejecting the claims and emphasizing its partnerships with reputable suppliers who assured them of the products’ authenticity. As this investigation continues, the implications for consumer trust and food safety remain significant. With more scrutiny likely to follow, the industry faces mounting pressure to improve transparency and accountability in sourcing and labeling practices. The findings underscore the urgent need for stronger oversight and more rigorous testing protocols to safeguard public health and maintain consumer confidence.
