The two wildfires that broke out in the Kouvafilia area of Thessaloniki on the afternoon of July 1st have been brought under control by emergency services. According to reports from SKAI, the fires originated in low vegetation and required significant resources to extinguish. A total of 30 firefighters, supported by one squad of foot troops from the 2nd EMOD, volunteers, 11 vehicles, two aircraft, and one helicopter, worked together to suppress the flames. The efforts were further assisted by water carriers from the Central Macedonia Regional Authority. Despite these coordinated actions, the situation remained challenging due to the nature of the terrain and the intensity of the fires.

In addition to the Thessaloniki incident, other regions in Greece also experienced wildfires. In the southern Peloponnese and northern Greece, firefighting aircraft were deployed to assist ground crews in containing three separate blazes. These included a fire near Varda in the western Peloponnese, where approximately 80 firefighters, along with 19 fire engines, volunteers, and four aircraft, fought against a fire consuming forests and farmland. Further south, near Harokopio in the Messinia region, four water-dropping planes and a helicopter joined forces with 40 firefighters. Meanwhile, another fire near the town of Katerini in northern Greece was being tackled by three aircraft supporting 32 firefighters. The Greek Fire Service warned that much of central and southern Greece, including the Greater Athens region, Evia, the northern Peloponnese, Rhodes, Thrace, the greater Thessaloniki area, and Halkidiki, faces a high risk of wildfires due to the current weather conditions.

Beyond Greece, the situation in Southern France has also escalated into a major crisis. Wildfires have spread rapidly across the region, particularly in the Pyrenees-Orientales department, threatening nearby towns such as Canet-en-Roussillon. Local authorities reported that over 1,500 people had been evacuated from camping sites and the airport in the nearby city of Perpignan, which was forced to close. The fires, fueled by strong winds and extreme heat, have already consumed large tracts of land, with reports indicating that nearly 87,000 hectares of land have turned to ash since the beginning of the summer season. In particular, 12,000 hectares burned in just one day alone. The French government, led by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, has convened meetings to address the growing crisis, emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent further damage.

The impact of these wildfires extends beyond environmental concerns. In the affected areas, local officials have expressed concern about potential risks to infrastructure, especially in industrial zones where hazardous materials could pose additional dangers. Pierre René de La Motte, a senior official in the Eastern Pyrenees department, highlighted the urgency of protecting sensitive areas, noting that certain buildings might contain volatile substances. The National Meteorological Service has issued warnings that another wave of extreme heat is expected in the coming week, which could exacerbate the situation and lead to even more widespread fires.

Meanwhile, international attention has focused on the broader implications of these wildfires, particularly in light of global climate patterns. The World Meteorological Organization had previously warned that record-breaking temperatures in Western Europe, which lasted for over a week at the end of June, would increase the likelihood of wildfires due to prolonged periods of high temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation. This pattern aligns with ongoing trends observed in many parts of the world, where rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns contribute to increased fire risks.

Despite the challenges, efforts continue to manage and mitigate the effects of these fires. In Greece, the coordination between local and national agencies has proven essential in responding effectively to the threats posed by the wildfires. Similarly, in France, the deployment of aerial support and the mobilization of thousands of firefighters reflect the scale of the response required to combat the escalating crisis. As the situation evolves, both countries remain vigilant, working tirelessly to protect communities, natural resources, and critical infrastructure from the devastating consequences of uncontrolled wildfires.
