The derailment involved a freight train carrying iron ore, which derailed after an automatic emergency brake was activated. While 29 railcars and one locomotive were affected, no injuries were reported, and most of the spilled iron ore did not reach the frozen surface of the nearby Nipissis River. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada stated it could not definitively identify the exact cause of the derailment. However, it suggested that a broken rail likely contributed to the incident. The board noted that the rail failure may have been influenced by the stress caused by sharp temperature changes and the prior passage of another train with a defective wheel. This analysis comes amid broader concerns about rail infrastructure reliability, particularly following a record number of broken-rail incidents in 2025. According to the report, the rail line in question, which was installed in 2022, had been inspected just three days before the derailation. Inspectors found no defects during this check. Despite these findings, the frequency of broken rails remained high, with 47 such incidents recorded throughout the year. More than half of these occurrences took place in January and December, highlighting a seasonal pattern that may be tied to environmental conditions affecting the tracks.
