The German government has officially blamed Russia for the failed drone attack on Ukrainian freight planes at Leipzig Airport, marking a clear escalation in its stance against Moscow’s hybrid warfare tactics. Four weeks after the incident, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) stated during a press conference that the attack was part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression. He emphasized that Germany is not at war, but remains a daily target of hybrid military operations. “We see a willingness to cause greater damage through hybrid attacks,” Dobrindt said, adding that the government is responding “reasonably and resolutely” while maintaining national unity. The attack occurred on August 4 and 5, when unknown perpetrators launched two drones from a distance toward the airport’s runway. One drone was equipped with 800 grams of Semtex, a military-grade explosive. The device targeted the wing of a parked Antonov AN-124 freight plane belonging to a Ukrainian airline. However, the fuse failed, and the drone crashed to the ground. A bus driver who happened to be present noticed the device and secured it with his foot. Despite the failure, the attack highlighted the precision and professionalism of the perpetrators, which many experts had long suspected to be linked to Russian intelligence. While the German government previously referred to the attack as being carried out by “foreign forces,” numerous experts early on pointed to Russia as the likely culprit. They noted the sophistication of the operation and the clarity of the motive, targeting infrastructure critical to Ukraine’s defense. This led to growing pressure on the government to take a firmer stance. The failure to act decisively in the past, according to some critics, has emboldened Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has increasingly escalated rhetoric against Western support for Ukraine. In response, the European Commission has reaffirmed its solidarity with Germany, with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stating that the bloc remains united in confronting Russia’s aggressive actions. During informal talks among EU foreign ministers in Ireland, Estonia’s Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas announced plans for additional sanctions targeting individuals and organizations within Russia’s military apparatus. She mentioned that over 1,600 names were already under consideration, with more potentially added. These measures aim to further isolate Russia economically and politically. Meanwhile, France has taken a firm stand, ordering the recall of its ambassador to the EU from Moscow. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the attack as part of a longer strategy by the Kremlin to undermine European democratic processes and support for Ukraine. He called for new sanctions against vessels associated with Russia’s shadow fleet, a term used to describe ships operated by Russian officials under false flags. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband echoed similar sentiments, calling the attack an attempt by Russia to divide Europe and weaken support for Ukraine. He warned that such efforts would fail as the West stands united against Russian aggression. The German government has also announced plans to close the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin, which operates as a cultural institution. Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) expressed appreciation for the strong European backing of Germany’s position, noting that Russia appears to recognize the bloc’s cohesion. He rejected claims by Putin that the attack was a political maneuver, arguing that such tactics would have been counterproductive given the political climate in eastern Germany. Wadephul insisted that the decision to attribute the attack to Russia was based on sound reasoning and necessary to protect national security.
