Ex-president Álvaro Uribe Vélez stated he would be available for questioning by Congress regarding his ongoing judicial process, amid controversy over investigations into alleged involvement in massacres during his time as governor of Antioquia. In a message posted on social media, Uribe emphasized his willingness to attend any hearing requested by legislators or members of Congress to explain his case. He claimed he has always been open with Colombian institutions and citizens, and this situation would be no different. Uribe’s comments came after the president of the Commission of Investigation and Accusation in the House of Representatives, Carlos Cuenca, formally asked Attorney General Luz Adriana Camargo to provide the file containing the judicial proceedings against Uribe related to the alleged massacre of El Aro in 1997. Cuenca argued that one of the investigated actions, alleged conspiracy to commit crimes, continued until 2003, when Uribe was serving his first presidential term, giving Congress authority to investigate. In response, prosecutor Gloria Marcela Abadia, who oversees the case before the Supreme Court of Justice, stated there were no elements indicating the activity under investigation extended into that period. Nevertheless, she sent the original documentation of the case to the Constitutional Court to determine whether it should remain under her jurisdiction or be transferred to Congress. Meanwhile, the Attorney General's Office will continue its investigation. The issue has sparked division within the Historical Pact, the largest bloc in Congress. Five of its representatives voted in favor of having the Commission of Accusations handle the investigation instead of the Attorney General's Office. This decision was viewed by some figures within the Pact, such as Carolina Corcho and Iván Cepeda, as a show of support for Uribe. Corcho criticized Cepeda for proposing a silence agreement over the serious nature of the massacres, which resulted in deaths, torture, displacement, and suffering for thousands of people. Cepeda responded by stating political ambition must have limits and questioned whether Corcho believed the person who led the fight against state crime impunity and advanced these cases in Antioquia should be blamed. Uribe had already been summoned for an investigative hearing, initially scheduled for July 24, but postponed to September 4. He has raised concerns about due process in the case.
