Electric vehicle charging consumption in Türkiye surged by 153.5 percent in the first half of the year, reaching 392,252 megawatt-hours (MWh), according to data published by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK). This marks a dramatic increase from the same period in 2023, reflecting a rapid expansion in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the corresponding growth in charging demand. The rise in electricity usage for EV charging aligns with an uptick in the number of charging sessions conducted across the country. In the first six months of this year, a total of 15.4 million charging sessions took place at stations managed by licensed charging network operators. The total charging time during this period amounted to 17.6 million hours, underscoring the increasing reliance on electric mobility among consumers. Comparing the figures with the previous year, the number of charging sessions saw a notable jump of 96.6 percent, while total charging time grew by 137.4 percent. These statistics highlight the accelerating pace of EV integration into daily life, driven by government incentives, environmental awareness, and technological advancements. İbrahim Öz, head of the EPDK’s Energy Transformation Department, emphasized that charging network operators have continued to invest in expanding the charging infrastructure within the regulatory framework set by the authority. This investment aims to ensure both the adequacy and sustainability of the EV charging network, as well as foster a competitive market environment. The expansion of charging infrastructure has been substantial. At the beginning of 2024, there were 12,084 charging points nationwide. By early 2025, this number had risen to 26,462. As of the latest update, the total number of charging points has surpassed 45,660. Among these, 19,903 are direct current (DC) chargers, which offer faster charging speeds suitable for long-distance travel, while 25,731 are alternating current (AC) chargers, commonly used for home and public parking areas. Additionally, 26 mobile charging units are available, providing flexibility for remote locations or temporary needs. This growth in charging infrastructure reflects broader trends in the transition toward cleaner energy sources and reduced carbon emissions. The surge in EV adoption is also influenced by policy measures aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependence and promoting renewable energy solutions. With more charging options becoming accessible, the convenience of owning an electric vehicle continues to improve, encouraging further uptake among consumers. Looking ahead, the continued expansion of the charging network will likely play a crucial role in supporting the nation's climate goals and enhancing its position in the global shift toward sustainable transportation. As the EV market matures, the focus will remain on ensuring reliable access to charging facilities, maintaining grid stability, and fostering innovation in energy storage and distribution technologies.
