Over the past four years, the committee has encountered new obstacles, including the rapid growth of artificial intelligence tools that could potentially influence voters. Unlike the previous election cycle, when ChatGpt was not yet publicly accessible, today’s electorate must navigate a digital landscape where misinformation spreads rapidly. A key challenge lies in the increased distrust toward institutions, a sentiment exacerbated by the nation’s polarized climate. According to Livne, this skepticism extends to the credibility of election outcomes. To counter these concerns, the CEC is implementing measures aimed at bolstering public confidence. These include enhancing transparency, increasing the number of monitors overseeing the voting process, and addressing a surge in petition submissions related to alleged violations of campaign laws. As of late August, more than 120 petitions had already been filed with the CEC, nearly double the total number received during the previous election campaign. Political parties and activist groups continue to submit complaints concerning advertising practices and voter privacy issues. With nearly two months remaining until the polls open, the volume of such petitions is expected to rise further. To manage the scale of the upcoming election, the CEC is processing a record 195,000 applications for individuals wishing to serve as poll workers. Of these, approximately 35,000 will be selected to monitor the election and supervise the counting of ballots at individual polling stations. This expansion reflects the growing complexity of administering a national vote under current conditions. Livne, who has served as the CEC’s legal adviser for 13 years, took on the role of acting director general following the resignation of longtime director general Orly Adas. His experience spans eight prior election cycles, giving him insight into the evolving nature of electoral administration. In a recent interview, Livne expressed confidence in the system’s ability to safeguard against fraud or manipulation, asserting that the numerous safeguards in place would allow the CEC to preemptively dismiss even the smallest allegations of irregularity. One notable change involves the real-time publication of voter turnout data. For the first time, the CEC will release the turnout rate at each of the 13,000 polling stations across the country. Previously, only the overall national turnout figure was disclosed. This shift aims to provide greater accountability and reassurance to voters, allowing them to track participation levels in their local areas. The exact frequency of these updates will be finalized closer to election day. With preparations intensifying, the CEC continues to refine its procedures, drawing on both historical precedents and contemporary challenges. The goal remains clear: to conduct an election that is transparent, secure, and reflective of the will of the Israeli people.
