The Spanish government will approve a special benefit for workers affected by wildfires this Tuesday during the Council of Ministers meeting. The measure, introduced as a temporary response to the ongoing emergency, aims to provide financial support to both employees and businesses impacted by the fires spreading across multiple regions. According to reports, the proposal was spearheaded by the Ministry of Labor and negotiated over the weekend with social agents and affected autonomous communities. This extraordinary allowance is designed to cover situations previously left unprotected, such as workers who cannot attend their workplace due to evacuation orders, loss of housing, or lack of basic services. The proposed law would allow companies to receive state funding to cover salaries and contributions for workers unable to perform their duties because of the fire-related disruptions. This measure is intended to alleviate the burden on businesses, which would otherwise have to bear these costs themselves. The initiative has been framed as a temporary solution, though officials from the Ministry of Labor have emphasized its potential for long-term implementation. However, some other ministries within the Socialist Party have expressed reservations, limiting the scope of the benefit to the current wildfire crisis. In addition to the salary coverage, the government plans to offer additional unpaid leave to employees whose family members have died as a result of the fires. This provision allows workers five extra days off to cope with their grief. The Ministry of Labor claims Spain already possesses one of the most advanced labor laws regarding climate protection, including measures for extreme temperatures and natural disasters. Nevertheless, officials believe further expansion of such protections is necessary given the increasing frequency of such events. The government’s approach draws inspiration from past experiences, such as the devastating wildfires in Valencia, where extensive compensation efforts were made for both material and labor losses. Officials noted that these types of interventions can help stimulate economic activity, making them more cost-effective than leaving workers and businesses unsupported. The Ministry argues that these incidents should not be treated as work-related accidents, thus excluding them from traditional insurance frameworks. Yolanda Díaz, head of the Ministry of Labor, has stressed that the new policy seeks to protect workers caught in a legal gray area, those who cannot access their workplaces or must sleep elsewhere due to the fires. These individuals currently lack a formal mechanism to secure income or benefits, and the new law aims to fill this gap. The government is also finalizing public investment figures for these benefits, although the amount is expected to be substantial. As preparations continue, the focus remains on ensuring that the legislation addresses immediate needs while laying the groundwork for future resilience against similar crises.
