Besplatni odmor, 6000 eura i putna torba: Tajlandski narko-korisnici u Europi

U članku se izvještava o rastućem trendu organiziranog krijumčarenja droge iz Tajlanda u Europu, posebno u vezi s mladim turistima koji djeluju kao kuriri.

A wave of Thai cannabis couriers has been detected across Europe, with organized crime exploiting the country's relaxed drug laws to smuggle large quantities of marijuana into the continent. On July 18, customs officials at Vienna International Airport intercepted two British citizens carrying nearly 50 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside their luggage. This incident highlights a growing trend in which young European travelers are being lured into acting as unwitting couriers, often under the guise of a free vacation and financial incentives. The method used by these criminal networks involves enticing young individuals, often students or recent graduates, with promises of a complimentary trip to Thailand, some spending money, and a chance to party. In exchange, they are asked to transport cannabis-filled suitcases back to Europe via commercial flights. The rewards can amount to around €6,000, making the proposition particularly attractive to those in need of quick cash. One such individual was Alma*, a 22-year-old Swedish woman who found herself at the center of this operation. On March 19, 2025, she boarded flight OS199 from Vienna to Frankfurt. As her plane prepared for takeoff, customs officers scanned her checked baggage and noticed suspicious items. Upon further inspection, one of the two suitcases, marked with her name, was discovered to contain 20 kilograms of cannabis valued at approximately €66,000. Police swiftly intervened, arresting Alma before she could board the aircraft. Alma initially claimed the cannabis was for personal consumption over the course of a year, but authorities quickly dispelled this claim. Her arrest underscores the risks associated with participating in such smuggling operations. Many of those caught have been young people seeking financial relief, often through friends, social media connections, or even informal lenders known as “credit sharks.” These individuals are frequently unaware of the legal consequences until they are apprehended. Thailand’s decision to legalize cannabis in 2022 created new opportunities for both legitimate businesses and illicit actors. While the government has attempted to regulate the industry, enforcement remains inconsistent, allowing for widespread cultivation and sale of the drug. This environment has made Thailand an ideal hub for international drug trafficking, particularly for European markets where cannabis is more expensive and heavily regulated. Customs and police forces across Europe have become increasingly vigilant, recognizing the pattern of smuggling through regular passenger flights. Authorities have noted that many of these couriers are recruited through online platforms, social media groups, or word-of-mouth recommendations. Some are approached directly by intermediaries offering the promise of easy money, while others are coerced or manipulated into participation. The scale of the problem continues to grow, prompting calls for stricter border controls and enhanced cooperation between law enforcement agencies. Countries such as Austria, Germany, and the United Kingdom have reported multiple cases involving Thai nationals or European citizens transporting cannabis in their luggage. The ease with which these operations are conducted suggests that the networks behind them are well-organized and adaptable to changing security measures. As the situation unfolds, investigators are working to trace the origins of the cannabis and identify the masterminds orchestrating these smuggling rings. Meanwhile, the individuals caught so far face serious charges, including drug trafficking and possession of illegal substances. Their cases serve as a warning to potential recruits about the severe penalties associated with involvement in such activities. Authorities remain concerned about the increasing number of young people being drawn into these operations, emphasizing the need for public awareness campaigns and stronger preventive measures. With the global demand for cannabis showing no signs of slowing down, the challenge for law enforcement will continue to evolve as criminal networks seek new ways to exploit regulatory loopholes.

Procjena pristranosti (Progresivno): U članku se pitanje postavlja kroz prizmu organiziranog kriminala i iskorištavanja, naglašavajući sistemske nedostatke i regulatorne rupe u Tajlandu.

Zašto činjenice (75): The article provides specific details such as the arrest of two British citizens with nearly 50 kg of cannabis at Vienna airport on 18 July, which aligns with the primary source's mention of increased smuggling attempts. However, it includes fictionalized elements like the name 'Alma' and her person

Zašto objektivnost (65): The article uses emotionally charged language such as 'angsteinflößenden Thailand-Urlaub' (terrifying Thailand vacation) and presents a highly dramatized personal account of a courier named Alma. This creates a biased and sensationalized portrayal of the situation rather than presenting a neutral ov
