Two single mothers living together and raising their children have declared they “don’t need any man” in their lives. The pair, both financially independent and committed to redefining traditional family structures, have created a shared household where they raise their children collectively. Their story has sparked interest among others who seek alternative models of parenting and support. Bernie Sinclaire, 38, mother of two boys, Nicolas, 9, and Marcos, 5, and Anabelle Gonzalez, 39, mother of one girl, Sophie, 7, are currently sharing a home and responsibilities. They describe themselves as part of a growing movement known as “mommunes,” which refers to communities of women who live together and raise their children collaboratively. This arrangement was born from their personal struggles with financial pressures and high housing costs, challenges many single parents face globally. For Sinclaire, the idea of co-living with other women had long been a dream. It began during her teenage years and evolved further while she studied matriarchal societies and human rights. Her vision became more concrete after becoming a mother. Meanwhile, Gonzalez initially hesitated to embrace this lifestyle. She was in a relationship that didn't align with the proposed arrangement. However, after ending that relationship, she moved into a two-bedroom apartment with her friend, Sinclaire. What started as a temporary solution quickly turned into a permanent decision to fully commit to a communal life. “Although it was somewhat dramatic, a transition from one adult and two children to a five-member team, it immediately lightened the burden of parenthood,” Sinclaire says. “I was so happy. The feeling was like having a pajama party every evening with my best friend, even during a time that was otherwise very difficult. Even amidst the adjustment period, I felt immediate relief and joy.” The two women refer to their household as a single family of five. From cooking meals to managing daily routines, everything is done with the entire group in mind. When children quarrel, they decide whether they need space, boundaries, or guidance back into play. If a child has specific needs, such as difficulty with homework, the parent of that child takes responsibility for the conversation. Both mothers have noticed positive changes in their children’s behavior and emotional well-being. Each child has had the opportunity to grow and develop while maintaining their playful nature. But the most noticeable transformation has been in the mothers themselves. “The commune provides immense support with domestic tasks and offers me emotional support in a safe environment without stress, meaning I can be a better mother to my sons,” Sinclaire explains. Their model is a direct response to the challenges faced by single mothers worldwide, including financial instability, balancing work and parenting without a partner's help, and the psychological toll of daily life. In Croatia, these issues are particularly pronounced, making their approach especially relevant. Sinclaire hopes that her children will remember their mothers as joyful and fulfilled individuals who felt supported, secure, and valued within their home. For her two sons, the experience has already left a lasting impression.
