In a statement released by his campaign, Begich and his running mate, Julia Hnilicka, announced that they were suspending their campaign and fully supporting Kreiss-Tomkins. They cited the need to consolidate resources and unify Democratic efforts, noting that the Begich campaign had raised over $1.3 million but would require significantly more funds to continue. After analyzing internal data and information from Kreiss-Tomkins’ campaign, they determined that aligning behind a single candidate would offer the best chance of success. “Rather than competing over visions that share so much in common, we are choosing to put our strength behind a shared vision for Alaska,” Begich stated. Kreiss-Tomkins responded by vowing to rally Begich’s supporters and prioritize key issues such as education funding, affordable housing, healthcare access, and fair taxation of Alaska’s oil and gas industry. He emphasized the importance of moving past partisan divisions. “To hell with political infighting,” he said. “Let’s build a future made in Alaska.” The Alaska Democratic Party expressed confidence in the strategy, stating that members are “in lockstep” and committed to winning the election. Meanwhile, the Republican field remained competitive. The top-finishing Republican candidates were Bernadette Wilson, a conservative activist and business owner, and Dave Bronson, a former mayor of Anchorage. Neither campaign responded to requests for comment. Treg Taylor, a former state attorney general, initially placed fifth in the primary but was later decertified by Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom, a fellow Republican, following recommendations from the state’s campaign finance commission. The commission found that Taylor had not met financial disclosure requirements. His campaign did not reply to inquiries. With Begich’s withdrawal, the final spot in the general election remains uncertain.
