Defence ministry may clear proposals worth over Rs 1 lakh crore today

India's defense ministry is set to approve a series of procurement proposals valued at over Rs 1 lakh crore, including advanced military equipment such as K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers, HAMMER precision-guided munitions, Russian-origin Verba air defense systems, and other critical defense technologies. These proposals will be reviewed by the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), where newly appointed Chief of Defense Staff General Raja Subramani, along with senior military leaders, will attend their first meeting in these roles. The Scorpene submarine project is unlikely to be considered at this stage. The Army plans to expand its artillery capabilities by acquiring 300 additional K-9 Vajra howitzers, which will be manufactured domestically by L&T in collaboration with South Korean firm Hanwha Aerospace. Additionally, the purchase of 600 HAMMER missiles for use in Rafale and Tejas fighter jets is under consideration, with production planned through a joint venture between Bharat Electronics and French company Safran. The Indian Army also aims to modernize its air defense systems by acquiring numerous Verba V-SHORAD systems, to be produced by Adani Defense.
