The bridge, which connects the northern and southern parts of Hombo, plays a vital role in daily life and commerce. Augustin Mbula, a local journalist from Walikale, explained its significance. “This bridge facilitates movement for the community, but it is also essential for commercial exchanges,” he said. “For example, Hombo North, situated on the west bank of the river, relies on Hombo South for food supplies through this bridge. If it remains in its current condition, it could lead to shortages. There have already been reports of food scarcity, and it is urgent that the bridge be repaired.” Hombo lies in one of the most remote areas of Walikale, where transportation is inherently difficult. The region’s isolation has long made infrastructure projects both necessary and challenging. The collapsed bridge was a temporary structure built by the local community to maintain connectivity. However, residents expressed concerns over its safety. A nearby resident, who participated in the community effort to rebuild the bridge, described the precariousness of their work. “We were among the initiators who constructed this new bridge to ease travel. But it is extremely dangerous. At any moment, it might collapse again. We risk losing lives in this river. Yet we don’t know how to build anything better. Our efforts are limited, so we are appealing to the Congolese government for assistance.” A video shared with local media on July 6, 2026, shows the newly constructed bridge.
