Claudio Loser, former head of the Western Hemisphere Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has described the recent visit of IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to Argentina as one of public relations rather than negotiation. The trip marks the first time a top IMF official has visited the country since 1999, when then-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn made his last visit before stepping down. This visit, which included a symbolic stop at Vaca Muerta, reflects a shift in the geopolitical and economic landscape, with the IMF seemingly backing President Javier Milei’s administration. Loser, who was present during the previous high-profile visit by IMF officials under the leadership of Horst Köhler, emphasized that this current trip does not involve direct negotiations. Instead, he viewed it as a gesture of support for Milei's government. “This is a visit of support to Milei and not a negotiation,” he stated during an interview with Net TV and Radio Perfil.
