A severe cholera outbreak in Borno State, Nigeria, has placed immense pressure on local health infrastructure, with suspected cases surpassing 35,500 and resulting in 198 fatalities since May. The situation escalated rapidly after initial reports emerged on 1 May, according to data shared by the Borno State Ministry of Health with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The international aid organization confirmed that the outbreak has spread quickly due to factors such as overcrowded informal settlements, insufficient access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor waste disposal practices. MSF has been actively responding to the crisis alongside local health authorities and other humanitarian groups. As of 12 July, the organization had established two Cholera Treatment Centres, five Cholera Treatment Units, and 17 oral rehydration points throughout Borno State. These centers have treated more than 24,000 individuals with suspected cholera, with over a quarter arriving in critical condition. Bienfait Tombola, MSF’s project medical coordinator in Maiduguri, stated that the group has significantly increased its operations over the last two months, yet the rate of new infections continues to outpace containment measures. The primary obstacles to controlling the outbreak include persistent challenges in providing clean water, proper sanitation, and adequate healthcare services to affected populations. MSF highlighted that many communities, especially those residing in informal settlements, remain without essential resources necessary to prevent the spread of the disease. Despite ongoing efforts to raise public awareness about cholera transmission, the organization noted that this knowledge gap continues to hinder effective containment strategies. To address these issues, MSF has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving public health outcomes. These include intensifying community education programs, training healthcare professionals in managing cholera cases, and implementing water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions. One notable action taken was an oral cholera vaccination campaign launched in early July, which reached over 2.6 million people with the support of local health authorities. The impact of the outbreak extends beyond Borno State, as it has also affected neighboring Plateau State. According to the Plateau State Ministry of Health, there have been 102 suspected cholera cases reported up to 12 July. This regional spread underscores the urgency of enhancing access to clean water, strengthening disease surveillance systems, ensuring prompt treatment availability, and broadening vaccination efforts among vulnerable populations. Efforts to mitigate the effects of the outbreak are ongoing, with a focus on addressing underlying conditions that contribute to the persistence of the disease. MSF emphasized the importance of continued investment in improving water quality, sanitation standards, and healthcare accessibility. These actions are crucial not only for curbing the current outbreak but also for preventing future occurrences of similar public health crises.
