Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to return to competitive football following an agreement between the English Football Association (FA), Mudryk himself, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The resolution came after Mudryk faced a potential four-year ban stemming from an adverse drug test result in October 2024. Under the terms of the agreement reached on Thursday, Mudryk will not serve the remainder of the ban, allowing him to return to action immediately. The FA confirmed the decision in a statement released on July 31, explaining that the resolution was reached through mutual understanding among all parties involved. As part of the deal, Mudryk acknowledged the Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) he was accused of committing and agreed to a period of ineligibility equivalent to the time already served up to the point of the agreement. This effectively nullifies the remaining duration of the original four-year ban imposed in April 2025. Mudryk, 25, had previously been suspended by the FA after testing positive for meldonium, a substance that was on WADA’s prohibited list at the time of his sample collection. However, the FA noted that if the same sample had been tested under current WADA guidelines, the concentration of meldonium would not have triggered an adverse finding. Changes to WADA’s technical documents since Mudryk’s test mean that similar results would not lead to sanctions today. Mudryk expressed relief at finally being able to return to football. In a public statement, he reiterated that he never knowingly took a banned substance and emphasized his dedication to fair competition. “I am grateful that this process has reached a conclusion, that I have been cleared to return to football and that I can now look ahead to my future,” he said. He added that his commitment to playing professionally and representing both his club and national team remained unwavering. Mudryk joined Chelsea from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 in a transfer valued at £62 million. His last appearance in a competitive match was in November 2024 before the suspension began. During his absence, Chelsea publicly supported him, stating that the club would assist him in making a smooth return to the sport. “We know how much this opportunity to return means to him,” the club said in a statement. “Everyone at the club now looks forward to helping Misha return to full fitness, back into the squad and back onto the pitch.” The FA had initially ruled that Mudryk’s positive test constituted an ADRV and issued a four-year ban, which would have kept him away from professional football until 2028. However, the appeal process led to negotiations with WADA, resulting in the revised agreement. Mudryk had previously challenged the FA’s ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), though the specifics of that appeal were not detailed in the latest statements. Chelsea’s upcoming schedule includes their Premier League opener against Fulham on August 24. The club has yet to confirm whether Mudryk will feature in that match, but the immediate lifting of his ban opens the door for his potential inclusion in the squad sooner than anticipated. Mudryk’s situation highlights ongoing discussions around the evolving nature of anti-doping regulations and the impact such policies have on athletes. While the FA and WADA have worked together to adjust procedures based on new scientific findings, individual cases continue to raise questions about the fairness of retrospective applications of rules. Despite these complexities, Mudryk’s clearance marks a significant shift in his career trajectory, offering him a chance to reclaim his place in top-tier football.
