Asghar Farhadi, the Iranian director and screenwriter, has been announced as the recipient of the Heart of Sarajevo award at this year’s 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival. The honor will be presented during the festival's tribute section, which includes a retrospective of his work. Farhadi, who last visited Sarajevo eight years ago, will personally accept the award. His return marks a significant moment for the festival, which has long celebrated international cinema. The Sarajevo Film Festival, held annually in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of Europe’s oldest and most respected film events. This year’s edition will take place from August 14 to 21. Farhadi’s selection underscores the festival’s commitment to recognizing global cinematic excellence. His previous visit in 2018 saw him serve as president of the jury for the competition section, while his film Everyone Knows was shown in the Open Air program. His return to Sarajevo is anticipated with great enthusiasm among both local and international audiences. Farhadi, born in 1972 in Iran, studied dramatic arts at Tehran University, earning his diploma in 1998 and later completing a master’s degree in stage directing. His breakthrough came with the 2002 film Earth, which established him as a prominent figure in world cinema. The success of The Color of Paradise (2009), which earned him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival, led to widespread international acclaim. His 2011 film A Separation further solidified his reputation, winning over 70 awards, including the Academy Award and César Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as the Golden Bear at the Berlinale. Following his success in Iran, Farhadi moved to France, where he directed Nerdy (2013), which received critical praise and won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for Bérénice Bejo. He returned to Iran to direct The Salesman (2016), which premiered at Cannes and earned him another Oscar nomination. The film also won the Best Screenplay and Best Actor awards at the festival. In 2021, his film The Salesman was again showcased at Cannes, receiving a mixed response from critics and audiences alike. His latest project, Parallel Stories, was filmed in France and premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. While the reception varied, the film remains a notable addition to his oeuvre. Farhadi continues to explore complex narratives that challenge conventional storytelling, often focusing on the intricacies of human relationships and societal pressures. His films are known for their emotional depth and nuanced character portrayals, making them stand out in the global cinematic landscape.
