In a separate report, Audi, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, revised its annual earnings forecast downward following its weakest first-half performance since 2021. The company now expects revenue of between 58 billion and 63 billion euros for the full year, which represents a reduction of five billion euros compared to earlier projections. The projected profit margin is also expected to drop by one percentage point, with estimates ranging from five to seven percent. However, current profitability stands at just 3.8 percent for the first half of the year, indicating a substantial gap between expectations and reality. Audi’s finance chief, Jürgen Rittersberger, emphasized the need for further cost-cutting measures and operational efficiency improvements. He stated that while existing savings initiatives have had some effect, they are insufficient to meet the demands of the current market environment. Rittersberger noted that efforts will focus on streamlining decision-making processes and reducing costs across both the Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt production sites. He stressed that there would be no competition between the two locations, instead advocating for collaborative efficiency gains. “If everyone helps, we can organize a future for Neckarsulm,” he added. Its net profit was also down by 220 million euros compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, optimism among German businesses has improved slightly in July, according to data released by the Ifo Institute in Munich. The business climate index rose to over 86 points, surpassing expectations. This uptick is attributed to more positive outlooks for future business conditions, although companies remain cautious about their current operating environments due to geopolitical tensions, notably the conflict between the United States and Iran. Rising oil prices and disruptions in maritime transport have further complicated the outlook. Long-term concerns persist within the German economy, with structural weaknesses and declining investment levels continuing to challenge growth prospects. The automotive industry, once a symbol of Germany's industrial strength, is now actively downsizing operations and contemplating factory closures. Reports suggest that up to 500,000 vehicles' worth of excess capacity must be reduced across European plants, including facilities in Emden, Hannover, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm. Currently, the Neckarsulm plant produces around 225,000 vehicles annually—75,000 fewer than in recent years, and operates exclusively on internal combustion engine models. Plans are already underway to eliminate night shifts at the site as part of ongoing capacity adjustments. Marc Schattenberg, a German economist at Deutsche Bank, viewed the Ifo data as a positive sign for the third quarter of the year and predicted overall economic growth of approximately 0.5 percent for the entire year. He highlighted the recent legislative reforms by the federal government as contributing to a stronger sense of optimism among businesses. “The Ifo business climate surprises positively in July and reaches its highest level since February,” he remarked.
