Federico Bessone, the Argentine coach of Hajduk Split, expressed his frustration after his team’s 0-4 defeat against Osijek at Poljud Stadium last weekend. The result, while seemingly dire on paper, did not fully reflect the performance of the team on the pitch, particularly during the period when the match was evenly balanced with both sides having equal strength. Bessone acknowledged that the loss was uncomfortable, but he emphasized that it should not define the team's trajectory. He pointed out that over the past few seasons, Hajduk has struggled to recover effectively from setbacks, often finding itself in a difficult position after initial disappointments. However, he stressed that this pattern would not repeat under his guidance, and he expects his squad to respond immediately following their first loss of the season. The early part of the season saw Hajduk perform strongly, with high expectations set for them. Bessone, however, remains focused on the upcoming matches rather than looking back. He reiterated that it is unacceptable for the team to lose momentum, whether they win or lose, by failing to maintain the same level of intensity and energy. “For me, it is unacceptable if we fall into a game and lack energy,” he stated. “Whether we win or lose, we must have the same mentality.” Bessone praised his players for understanding these principles and believes in their ability to execute what they plan on the field. He added that he is solely focused on the present, not on past results, and that the team must continue to play as they did in the first three rounds of the season. “If we don’t play well like we did in the first three games, it will be hard for us,” he warned. Bessone also cautioned against underestimating Osijek, despite the expectation that the match might be relatively easy. He warned that such a mindset could lead to major mistakes. “If even for a moment we think that Slaven Belupa’s team is an easy opponent, we’ll make a big mistake,” he said. This sentiment reflects his awareness of the challenges ahead, especially given the importance of the upcoming fixtures. The team faces a series of tests, including away matches against Varaždin and home games against Dinamo Zagreb and Rude Špica, all of which require careful preparation. Bessone admitted that he has been forced to improvise due to injuries and form issues within the squad. While the identity of the player who will replace the injured Mustafić in the right-back position remains undisclosed, he confirmed that the decision has already been made. He explained that Posavec, who has shown improvement, is not yet ready to start regularly. “He has advanced significantly, but I still believe he isn’t ready to be a regular starter,” Bessone said. He noted that he is 90 percent certain about his selection, though he prefers to keep the choice confidential until the players are informed. Jovičić, who has not received much playing time, is not considered a viable option for the right-back role. Potential alternatives include Jurišić, Heister, possibly Hasić, and even Bukvić. However, Bessone suggested that Bukvić may not be moved from goalkeeping due to the team’s need for stability in defense. The upcoming matches, particularly the ones involving European opponents, will test the team’s resilience and adaptability. Bessone, however, remains confident and focused. He emphasized that while the schedule is demanding, each match is crucial, especially at home. “We know our schedule, but every match is important, especially at home,” he concluded.
