Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew expressed openness to the idea during a recent meeting of provincial leaders in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He emphasized his willingness to consider the pipeline, stating that it could contribute to strengthening Canada’s economy. “I’m open to it. I love Alberta, I love Albertans. So, willing to entertain the idea,” he said. His remarks came after discussions with Premier Smith, Premier Ford, and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, as well as Indigenous leaders and residents. Despite Kinew’s openness, the proposal faces several hurdles. There is currently no private funding committed to the project, though Ontario is exploring government-backed financing options. Additionally, the federal government has yet to formally endorse the plan, leaving uncertainty about its viability. The pipeline would require extensive planning and environmental assessments, particularly given the potential impact on Indigenous lands and ecosystems. The Alberta-Ontario pipeline is part of broader efforts to enhance Canada’s energy infrastructure amid ongoing tensions with the United States. Both the Alberta-Ontario and another proposed pipeline to British Columbia’s West Coast are being promoted as key components of a strategy to boost exports and counteract the effects of U.S. trade policies. However, the Alberta-Ontario project lacks the same level of federal support as the West Coast initiative, which was recently announced with backing from Prime Minister Mark Carney. Premier Ford noted that the pipeline could offer Manitoba opportunities to expand into the Port of Churchill, a region he has previously highlighted as a strategic growth area. Yet, the absence of detailed cost estimates and timelines has left many stakeholders uncertain about the project’s future. Some experts suggest that the lack of clarity on funding and construction responsibilities could delay or derail the proposal. As the premiers continue their meetings in Prince Edward Island, the looming threat of U.S. tariffs adds further pressure to resolve disputes over trade and economic policy. Premier Kinew indicated he expects more information from the Prime Minister regarding negotiations with the United States, especially as the deadline for increased tariffs approaches.
