Kiprotich was found safe but visibly shaken by a Standard Group team led by CEO Chaacha Mwita early Wednesday morning near Masinga Dam, approximately 200 kilometers southeast of the abduction site. According to the Standard Group, Kiprotich was seized around 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday while traveling on the Gilgil-Nakuru highway near Nakuru. Dashcam footage released by the media group shows a white unmarked vehicle stopping in front of Kiprotich’s car during a section of the road where temporary barriers restricted traffic to a single lane. Four individuals, wearing civilian clothing and concealing their faces, approached the car. Some were armed with firearms, while others carried objects resembling baseball bats. They took Kiprotich to their vehicle and drove away. The Standard Group confirmed that Kiprotich was discovered by its team at around 6:30 a.m. near Masinga Dam, having been left by his captors in the early hours of the morning. While the journalist was described as physically unharmed, the organization emphasized the distressing nature of the incident. Kiprotich, who works for The Standard, a publication known for its critical coverage of the government, has previously spoken about threats against him. In June, he recounted narrowly escaping another kidnapping attempt just three days after President Ruto publicly criticized the Standard Group on social media. The incident has drawn sharp responses from human rights organizations and journalism bodies. Kenya’s editors’ guild condemned the abduction as a “disturbing escalation” in the harassment of journalists within the country. Amnesty International Kenya urged authorities to conduct an independent investigation, highlighting serious concerns over media freedom following the incident. These groups have long pointed to a growing trend of abductions and intimidation directed at government critics and activists. Authorities in Kenya have yet to officially comment on the abduction. However, reports indicate that dozens of government opponents and activists have been kidnapped this year alone, with such incidents increasing significantly since widespread anti-government protests erupted in 2024.
