Amit Shah, the Union home minister, conducted a field inspection of border security measures in West Bengal on Saturday, focusing on technological upgrades aimed at enhancing the safety of the India-Bangladesh border. During the visit, he examined an indigenous radio-based fence breach detection system that automatically sends alerts to Border Security Force (BSF) personnel whenever unauthorized access attempts occur. This system forms part of the central government's broader initiative to modernize border security using advanced surveillance tools. It marks the first time since the BJP took control of the state that Shah has personally assessed border security conditions on the ground. The inspection occurred as part of a three-day tour of West Bengal, during which Shah evaluated security protocols along the India-Bangladesh border, convened discussions on law enforcement, and launched several infrastructure initiatives. He emphasized the government's commitment to addressing issues such as smuggling, economic crimes, and unauthorized entry into border regions. According to officials, the system emits a pre-recorded warning upon detecting breaches or tampering with the fence, allowing immediate response by security forces. This is particularly crucial given the challenging geography of the region, where approximately 180 kilometers of the 2,216.7-kilometer India-Bangladesh border runs through riverine areas unsuitable for traditional fencing. In addition to the radio-based system, Shah reviewed an infrared alarm setup tailored for difficult terrains, including riverine zones and gaps in existing fencing. These systems detect interruptions in infrared beams, triggering early warnings for security personnel. A government representative noted that the focus is on developing smart borders through indigenous, cutting-edge technologies that improve surveillance capabilities and deter infiltration. The emphasis is on ensuring both security and the ease of movement for civilians and farmers residing near the border. During the visit, Shah virtually inaugurated three BSF infrastructure projects totaling ₹47 crore and initiated the construction of a 4-kilometer border fence at a cost of ₹30 crore on newly acquired land for two border outposts. The projects aim to bolster the operational efficiency of the BSF while reinforcing the physical barriers along the frontier. Addressing BSF personnel in Siliguri, he reiterated the government's goal of creating an impenetrable border through the implementation of a quadrilateral security grid involving multiple agencies. Earlier, Shah had mentioned plans to introduce a new border security framework that integrates efforts from border guards, local communities, police, and administrative bodies. Following the successful campaign against left-wing extremism, the home ministry is advancing two key objectives: achieving a drug-free India by 2047 and fortifying the nation's borders by monitoring demographic shifts caused by infiltrators and implementing countermeasures. Officials have confirmed that the government is also deploying underground radar systems, anti-drone equipment, and advanced drone surveillance across the eastern and western frontiers to further enhance security.
