The Swiss government will hold a referendum on September 27, 2026, on a neutrality initiative proposed by former federal councilor Christoph Blocher and his political allies. The initiative seeks to redefine the country’s traditional stance of neutrality by making it more rigid and absolute. Supporters argue this would protect Switzerland from foreign conflicts, while critics claim it risks isolating the country and undermining its diplomatic flexibility. The proposal, backed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) and the Pro Schweiz movement, aims to embed stricter neutrality principles into the federal constitution. According to the initiative, Switzerland should avoid involvement in international disputes and refrain from taking sides in conflicts, even if doing so could mean failing to support democratic values abroad. This has sparked intense debate over whether such a policy would safeguard Switzerland or render it complicit in global injustices. Blocher, who is 85 years old, has become the face of the campaign. He has been actively promoting the idea through public appearances, including a speech at the Federal Day celebrations in Interlaken, where he addressed around 1,500 supporters. His wife, Silvia Blocher, supports the initiative, believing it is necessary to educate the public on the importance of neutrality. She acknowledges concerns that Blocher might be pushing too hard, but she believes his charisma and wit make him effective in rallying support. Throughout his career, Blocher has played a pivotal role in transforming the SVP from a small farmers' party into the largest political force in Switzerland. His ability to connect with voters through humor and sharp rhetoric has made him a formidable figure in Swiss politics. Despite his age, he continues to engage directly with the public, using his platform to advocate for a return to what he calls “traditional Swiss neutrality.” His speeches often include biting critiques of politicians he views as compromising Switzerland’s interests. For example, he has mocked younger lawmakers who he claims rush from university halls to parliamentary seats without sufficient experience. He has also joked about female politicians who, he says, move from maternity wards to parliament, implying they lack the depth needed for serious governance. Critics, however, argue that Blocher’s style is outdated and that his approach risks alienating younger generations. A recent survey suggests that the referendum outcome could be close, with young voters largely supporting sanctions against Russia. This indicates that many Swiss citizens believe maintaining a flexible stance on neutrality is essential for upholding democratic values globally. Opponents of the initiative, known as Operation Libero, have launched their own campaign to counter the proposal. They argue that the initiative would make Switzerland less influential and more passive in international affairs. Their slogan, “Feiggenossen?” (“cowardly comrades?”), challenges the notion that strict neutrality equates to strength. They accuse the proponents of the initiative of promoting a form of self-isolation rather than true independence. The initiative would require a constitutional amendment, which means it must pass both chambers of the Swiss Parliament and secure a majority in a national vote. With the referendum approaching, tensions remain high, and the outcome is expected to shape Switzerland’s future role in global politics for years to come.
