Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella announced on Sunday a new phase of cooperation with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, following Bukele’s congratulations on de la Espriella’s assumption of office on August 7. The Colombian leader emphasized his commitment to strengthening ties with the Central American nation, which shares similar hardline governance approaches. In a message posted on Twitter, de la Espriella stated, “From Colombia, we will work to open a new stage of cooperation, especially in security, trade, and development, translating into concrete results for our peoples.” The announcement follows a bilateral meeting between the two countries' vice presidents, José Manuel Restrepo of Colombia and Félix Ulloa of El Salvador, during de la Espriella's inauguration ceremony. They agreed to establish a “Binational Business Council” aimed at enhancing trade and investment relations between the two nations. This move signals a strategic alignment beyond symbolic gestures, reflecting deeper diplomatic and ideological connections between the two governments. Ideological parallels between de la Espriella and Bukele have been evident since their respective campaigns. Bukele’s administration has served as a model for right-leaning leaders across Latin America, and de la Espriella’s policies mirror those of the Salvadoran president. Both leaders have used similar rhetoric, such as de la Espriella’s campaign slogan “Los de siempre,” which echoes Bukele’s criticism of traditional political parties during his presidential bid. Additionally, de la Espriella’s proposal to build ten large prisons to combat crime draws inspiration from Bukele’s efforts in El Salvador, including the construction of the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (Cecot). The connection between the two administrations extends beyond policy. A group of influencers close to de la Espriella visited El Salvador before the first round of elections to study Bukele’s approach. Activists such as Vincent Ramos, Santiago Giraldo, Miguel Zárate, and Senator Alejandro Bermeo met with Salvadoran officials to learn how to apply Bukele’s strategies in Colombia. These visits were also linked to Bermeo’s successful Senate campaign under the Salvación Nacional party. Economic ties between the two countries are also notable. Carlos Calleja, president of the Colombian retail giant Grupo Éxito, previously ran against Bukele in the 2019 Salvadoran presidential election. However, he later became aligned with Bukele’s regime, participating in business initiatives promoted by the Salvadoran government. Grupo Éxito owns Súper Selectos, the largest supermarket chain in El Salvador. Meanwhile, Jorge Jaller, former vice president of Retail at Grupo Éxito, was appointed by de la Espriella as Colombia’s ambassador to Venezuela. According to the Colombian presidency, de la Espriella is currently attending private meetings in Barranquilla, one of his alternate residences. Later in the day, he is scheduled to attend the silletero parade during the Medellín Flower Fair, a major cultural event in the region. The growing relationship between Colombia and El Salvador reflects broader regional trends toward right-wing governance and security-focused policies. As both leaders continue to pursue their agendas, the collaboration between their administrations could influence regional dynamics and set precedents for other nations seeking similar models of governance.
