Four people were killed and 11 others injured on Friday morning after a speeding sleeper bus lost control on the Bhopal bypass bridge in Biaora and crashed into a wall in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district, police said. The incident occurred as the bus was traveling from Kanpur to Indore, according to Rajgarh superintendent of police (SP) Amit Tolani. The crash resulted in several passengers falling off the bridge after the windows shattered, with some landing directly on the bridge itself. The deceased included cyber inspector Ravi KB, who was posted in Bengaluru. He was traveling to Indore with his team to apprehend a suspect. His team members, Vishwanath and Ramesh, were among the injured. Tolani explained that the bus was moving at high speed and lost control due to a curve in the bridge. This led to the collision with the wall, causing the loss of life and injuries. Passengers were pulled out of the bus with the assistance of locals, and all 11 injured were taken to the Civil Hospital in Biaora for treatment. Four of the critically injured were subsequently referred to Bhopal for further medical care. Local MLA Narayan Singh Panwar responded to the tragedy by pledging to install warning signs and speed breakers at the dangerous curve on the bridge. He extended his condolences to the victims and their families, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures on the route. The SP, Tolani, confirmed that the driver of the bus was among those who lost their lives, adding to the severity of the incident. In other parts of the country, similar road incidents have raised concerns over infrastructure safety. In Assam, a separate bus collision with a goods truck on National Highway-27 claimed the lives of seven individuals and injured five others. The accident occurred in the Sonapur-Khetri area on the outskirts of Guwahati city on Sunday evening. According to police, three people died immediately, while others were taken to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Four more succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The deceased were identified as Prashanta Talukdar, Anima Deka Bordoli, Gopal Das, and others from different districts in Assam. The bus, carrying 14 passengers including the driver and a helper, reportedly lost control and collided with the truck. A local resident described the damage as severe, noting that the front part of the bus was completely mangled. Rescue teams had to cut through the wreckage to extract the survivors. The truck driver fled the scene, and police are currently searching for him. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the site and announced that the state government would provide compensation of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased. He expressed deep sorrow over the incident and stated that the administration is addressing the road conditions. The Additional Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) in Guwahati, Safiqul Hussain, noted that the bus had crossed the divider before striking the truck. Locals have criticized the frequent occurrence of such accidents, blaming poor road maintenance and neglect by authorities. Protesters blocked NH-27 on Monday, demanding immediate action against unsafe road conditions. A meeting was held involving NHAI officials, police, and local representatives to address the concerns. NHAI has committed to repairing all potholes along the affected stretch within seven days. Officials emphasized that the administration has considered input from all parties before setting the deadline. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, another road accident occurred near Cuddalore, where an SUV collided with a SETC bus, resulting in two deaths and six injuries. The incident took place on the Villupuram-Nagapattinam highway on August 30, 2026. The deceased were identified as Vignesh and Parasuraman from Chennai, who were traveling with seven others returning from Velankanni. The SUV driver lost control and struck the bus, trapping its occupants. The injured were taken to the Cuddalore Government General Hospital, and traffic disruption was reported on the highway. The Cuddalore Newtown police are conducting the investigation.
