The Gauhati High Court granted bail to suspended Assam Police DSP Sandipon Garg, who is connected to the death of singer Zubeen Garg in a scuba diving accident in Singapore in September 2025. Sandipon, a cousin of the deceased, was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The court did not read out the full bail order, according to the special public prosecutor. Earlier, another accused, Amritprava Mahanta, a co-singer of Zubeen Garg, was granted bail on a bond of ₹50,000. Zubeen Garg's death occurred shortly before a scheduled performance at the Northeast India Festival. Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of the festival, was also arrested and faces criminal charges. The Supreme Court recently urged the Assam government to expedite the trial, emphasizing the need for a swift legal process. The defense for Shyamkanu Mahanta argues that Zubeen Garg was an adult who chose to dive despite wearing a life jacket, while the prosecution claims there is evidence suggesting a conspiracy.
