Central African Republic Tessin geologist dies while on a treasure hunting mission

A Swiss geologist from Ticino died during a mission in the Central African Republic while searching for mineral resources, according to local authorities. The man was kidnapped by unknown individuals along with a local miner near the village of Gbango-Carrière, approximately 55 kilometers north of the capital, Bangui. The attack occurred on Thursday, August 5, 2026. During the incident, a commander from the Central African Army was also taken hostage. The victim was working under contract for a resource company based in the United Arab Emirates. His work focused on identifying valuable minerals beneath the surface, a career spanning two decades across different parts of the world. He was in the region conducting geological surveys aimed at uncovering deposits of gold, diamonds, copper, lithium, uranium, and particularly rare earth elements such as coltan and cobalt, resources highly sought after by global technology firms. The Central African Republic is among the poorest nations globally, with 85 percent of its population living below the poverty line. Its healthcare system is virtually nonexistent, and economic hardship persists despite the country’s rich subterranean reserves. While gold and diamonds have historically been central to the economy, recent interest has shifted toward other critical materials, especially rare earth elements essential for modern electronics and renewable energy technologies. The political landscape in the country has evolved significantly over the past decade. President Faustin-Archange Touadéra initially formed a strategic alliance with the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, which granted the group mining rights in exchange for protection. Following the death of Wagner's leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, Russian President Vladimir Putin replaced Wagner with the Africa Corps, a military structure directly controlled by Moscow. This shift allowed foreign actors, particularly the UAE, to establish agreements with Touadéra and gain access to the nation’s mineral wealth. Unlike in neighboring countries such as Mali, Libya, and Burkina Faso, where the transition from Wagner to the Africa Corps was relatively swift, the process in the Central African Republic has been slow. Wagner had built deep economic and political ties within the country, creating unusual alliances and encouraging local leaders to continue using the old Russian model of protection in exchange for resources. This has led to the emergence of a quasi-mafia-like system, where power and wealth are often intertwined. In this context, companies from the UAE have become more prominent players in the region. While smaller Chinese, French, and Russian firms remain active in the shadows, the UAE has emerged as a key partner of the government. Russia, through the Africa Corps, continues to exert influence, maintaining a de facto role akin to a shadow defense minister. Touadéra’s leadership has grown increasingly authoritarian since he became the first democratically elected president in 2016. After five coups in the country’s history, his tenure marked a turning point. However, his rule has become more autocratic, culminating in a constitutional amendment that allows him to remain in power indefinitely, a move similar to that of his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame. Opposition parties have criticized recent elections held in January 2026, alleging fraud and intimidation. The lack of institutional strength behind Touadéra and his allies has created a vacuum of governance, leading to widespread instability and violence. The situation reflects broader challenges in the region, where political control and resource extraction are deeply interconnected.
