In his evening address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russian attacks on Zaporiyia and Dnipro, calling them “very cynical.” He stated that Russian forces in Zaporiyia had targeted civilian vehicles using drones, including a minibus and a city bus, resulting in casualties and injuries. In Dnipro, a civilian production facility was hit, leading to further losses. The attacks were also recorded in the Kherson, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy regions. Zelensky emphasized that Russia continues its explicitly terrorist war against Ukraine and Ukrainians, stating that Ukraine would respond in a completely just manner. He added that this response would target the Russian state system and Russia’s ability to continue the war.
“Returning the reality of war to Russia”
Zelensky addressed the situation in Russia, countering President Putin's claims of complete control with the reality of fuel shortages in Russian regions. He noted that while Putin could continuously claim on television that everything is under control, that fuel is available, and that Russian ministers are sufficiently competent, Russians standing in lines for fuel in various parts of Russia can see that their “three-day war” has now entered its fifth year. He pointed out that even a country known as the oil state, the gas station, is now facing fuel shortages. This, he said, is a direct consequence of the war and an example of how Ukraine responds precisely rather than as terrorists. “We are returning the reality of war to Russia and doing everything possible to make the continuation of the occupation of our country more difficult,” he added, mentioning the implementation of Ukrainian plans for long-term and medium-term sanctions aligned with military command and intelligence services.
Russia missed the deadline 15 times for capturing the Donetsk region
The president thanked all combat brigades holding Ukrainian positions, especially in the Donetsk region where Russian attacks are most intense. He stated that since the start of the invasion, Russian leadership has set 15 different deadlines for the complete capture of the region. “Russian political leadership remains obsessed with Donbas. That illusion—that they will fully occupy Donbas—has been held for 15 times,” he declared. He specified that the deadlines for 2022 were March 31, May 9, June 1, September 15, and December 31. In 2023, Moscow set January 1 and December 31 as new targets. During 2024, two additional deadlines were set, and in 2025, three: September 1, December 1, and December 25. This year, Zelensky noted, the deadline was moved from March 31 to September 1, and the current valid one is December 31.
“If Russia does not end its war, it will have to move this deadline again,” he warned. He highlighted that Ukraine has presented all proposals for ending the war but that Russia has rejected each one.
Announcement of intensified diplomatic activities
Zelensky announced that over the coming weeks, work with international partners would intensify to bring the peace process closer. He expressed expectations for a positive response from the G7 group and members of the Coalition willing to meet Ukrainian demands. “June and July must deliver results: primarily for Ukraine, and for our shared commitment to ensuring security. Peace is needed,” he concluded. At the end of his address, he thanked everyone helping in Ukraine’s defense.
The attacks on Zaporiyia and Dnipro highlight the ongoing intensity of the conflict, with both sides continuing to face significant challenges. The impact on civilians and infrastructure underscores the human cost of the war. As the situation evolves, the international community remains engaged, seeking ways to de-escalate tensions and find a lasting resolution. The upcoming months will likely see increased diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful outcome, although the path forward remains uncertain and complex.
