Sentenced to two and a half years in prison for an unfinished Netflix series

In a Los Angeles courtroom on Monday, Carl Rinsch, a filmmaker known for his work on the 2013 movie *47 Ronin*, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for financial misconduct related to a failed Netflix series. The case has drawn significant attention due to its high-profile nature and the substantial sums involved. Rinsch had been accused of embezzling funds intended for the production of a science fiction series titled *White Horse* and instead using them for personal luxury purchases and risky investments.

According to court documents, Netflix initially allocated approximately €37.5 million (about $44 million) to Rinsch's production company for the series, which was set to air on the streaming platform. Later, when Rinsch requested additional funding, Netflix sent another €9.4 million (around $11 million). However, rather than investing this money into the production as agreed, Rinsch allegedly diverted the funds to his personal account. He reportedly used part of the money for speculative cryptocurrency investments, which resulted in losses. The remaining portion was spent on luxury items such as five Rolls-Royces, one Ferrari, numerous expensive watches, clothing, and even two massage chairs. Additional expenses included a luxurious bed set valued at around €251,000 and hotel stays or property rentals where he lived during the period.

The prosecution argued that Rinsch’s actions were driven purely by greed and that he had access to all sorts of privileges, including family wealth, elite education, famous friends, and a successful career. They contended that he should serve a five-year sentence for the amount he owes to Netflix, which totals around $11 million. However, the judge ultimately decided on a 30-month sentence, which will begin in September. Rinsch’s defense team plans to appeal the ruling, arguing that the sentence is too lenient given the potential maximum penalty of 90 years.

Rinsch himself addressed the court before the sentencing, admitting that his behavior stemmed from mental stress and issues with psychiatric medications. He claimed that these challenges forced him to confront the reality of his health, judgment, and life choices. He expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the harm caused by his decisions. Despite this, he emphasized that he now seeks new medical care to address these issues.

Supporters of Rinsch have voiced their concerns about the severity of the punishment. Among them is actor Keanu Reeves, who played the lead role in *47 Ronin*. In a letter to the judge, Reeves described Rinsch as someone whose work brings joy and warmth to the lives of others and inspires many with his creativity and vision. While acknowledging that he does not know the full details of the case, Reeves noted that Rinsch has a tendency to self-sabotage beyond the scope of agreements made. He expressed hope that the judge would consider both mercy and justice when delivering the final verdict.

Friends and colleagues of Rinsch have also spoken about how they perceived changes in his demeanor after signing the contract with Netflix. According to reports, some close associates felt that Rinsch became increasingly confused and overwhelmed. There were indications that he believed he could predict when certain events would occur, but these predictions did not align with actual outcomes.

As Rinsch prepares to serve his sentence, questions remain about the future of his career and whether he can redeem himself professionally. His legal team continues to explore options for appealing the conviction and potentially reducing the sentence. Meanwhile, Netflix faces the challenge of recovering the lost investment and deciding on the future of the *White Horse* project, which remains unfinished. The case highlights the complexities of managing large-scale media productions and the risks associated with misusing funds meant for creative projects.
