Number of school accidents to rise sharply in 2025

The number of school route accidents in Austria rose significantly in 2024, according to data from Statistik Austria, which was cited by the Austrian Road Safety Club (VCÖ). A total of 537 incidents were reported, marking an increase of 118 compared to previous years. In these accidents, 577 children were injured, with 72 cases being severe. Tragically, one child in Tyrol lost their life as a result of the incident. The VCÖ is calling for improved child-friendly traffic planning, including wider sidewalks, clear crosswalks, and reduced speed limits to 30 km/h in residential areas near schools and kindergartens.

Bias read (Center): The article presents factual data on the rise in school route accidents and cites an official source (Statistik Austria) without overtly criticizing or praising specific policies. While the issue of road safety is politically sensitive, the article does not take a clearly left or right-leaning frame
